Zoloft and Paxil together ?
Question:
Hi everyone , I was taking Zoloft 100mg for about 2 months and it starting causing major insomnia(he suspects it was the zoloft but not sure) so my pdoc switched me over to Paxil 40 mg a day and still taking 50 mg of Zoloft does this sound normal to take 2 ssri’s at the same time.He says if the Paxil doesn’t work he can go back to the Zoloft.I also take 1 mg of K a day.Any suggestions would be appreciated.By the way does anyone else wake up kind of jittery in the
mourning Hi Kev, I have heard of people switching and having to start one at a low dose as they tapered the other, but never have I heard of jumping right to 40mgs Paxil! That seems awfully high as a starting dose while waiting to get the Zoloft out of your system. I would really ask about this as it seems outside the norms for side effects and adjusting. The K is great, but is going to be hard to tell, if you have some bad side effects, what is doing what as there is a documented SSRI withdrawl syndrome that can happen. While MY doc says a benzo is a benzo, he is most careful with the SSRI’s as they can cause so many different effects with each individual. IS a good idea not to go without an SSRI if you are not used to it, tho 2 months is not very long. But such a high dose of Paxil??? That seems very odd to me. Gwen

I don’t know about the Zoloft, but that’s a high dose for Paxil. Within normal but high. In combination with another SRI that could be quite a wallop you’re getting. My suggestion for people who get insomnia on Paxil is to switch the time you take it. If you’re taking the Zoloft at night and waking up jittery and having insomnia, change to the am. That’s a much more conservative adjustment. Also, although you are already on one SRI, switching to another may bring up a whole bunch of new side effects. My pdoc has me on Paxil and .5 mg Klonopin. The Klonopin is basically to help me sleep. (Sleep is the first, major symptom for anxiety for me). Is your doctor against benzos? If not, this is a possible combo to try (SRI plus benzo). Many of us have found that with the combination we can get by on lower doses of both medicines, which I think is a good thing. This sounds like a very peculiar combination to me. I would prefer taking the Zoloft which helped you except for causing insomnia and use some Xanax on the side. (As little as possible, as much as you need). The idea of using two meds from the same group seems not very sensible. Philip Peters WE ARE NOT ALONE
