jumpy legs
Question:
I would like to ask a silly question: what is meant by "jumpy legs?" For several years, I’ve had the habit of bouncing my legs up and down while I sit. Lately my wife says that lately I have been doing this much more. She thinks it’s an indication of something serious; I tell her not to worry. However, as I have gained about 100 pounds over the last three years (following a knee injury) and Type II diabetes runs in both sides of my family, I thought it might be worthwhile to ask.
Although it is hard to tell, the conversation seems to be about restless leg syndrome. This occurs most often at night and is described as having to move your legs, quite often having to get up and walk around. Just staying in bed is quite uncomfortable, although not painful. It can, in its more extreme manifestations, make it very difficult to get a good nights sleep. — Charly Coughran

I’m definately not a doctor, but for any type of nerve damage, including "jumpy legs", I suggest using a supplement called "potassium". This is a great help with my nerve damage due to diabetes Type 1. I lay awake sometimes, and notice that my muscles jump or cramp. That’s due to not enough potassium in the body.

My Dr. prescribed Klonopin for restless legs. I have found all kinds of information on the internet about this. It is usually grouped with Narcolepsy and other sleep disorders. I am thankful that I don’t have it as bad as my brother-in-law. I have mentioned the Klonopin to my sister (she is a nurse) don’t know if the Dr. has prescribed it for my bro.in law yet. It definately helps me.

I have been diabetic for 8 years, insulin dependant for the past 9 months. I recently started having jumpy legs. i have not ben able to narrow it down to anyone thing that might be causing this. Has anybody else been having this problem. This is a common problem. Make sure you get enough potassium and drink plenty of water. This should help.
Drinking milk is reported to work as well. ROb D

Jump legs usually means that when you are sitting with your legs still, they will jump or move on their own. This is usually associated with neuropathy. Have you lost any feeling in your feet? I would absolutely get to a doctor and get tested however as that is a large weight gain and with DM on both sides I would believe that you have a higher risk factor. By your tagline I also see that you are a dedicated engineer. I used to believe the same thing until I saw how much middle and upper management was paid in relation to myself. Kicked my butt up real quick in the heirarchy and along the way lost the idealism. Still trying to figure out if it was a good move or not. Reader’s Digest did an article about it several months ago. Medical science hasn’t much to offer. But, his doctor perscribed diazepan which is the generic for valium. He takes a really small doseage and only when it’s bothering him. I think any antidepressant will do as I am a Type II and my doctor perscribed amytriptiline which is an antidepressant also for my burning feet which is neurotrophy and a diabetic problem. The only way you’re going to find out if you’re diabetic is to take a blood test….Good luck.
