Just some more questions

Question:

I am going to advise something that may seem strange but works. Get in the sunlight often or buy sunlight bulbs for your home. The illness is Seasonal Affective Disorder which often looks like depression but is caused by the wrong light.

I’ve been using both for years.  What is the problem with the two?  I take two Amantadine a day and 3 (yes 3) Prozac.  I had almost suicidal depression from the Avonex and got off after 4 mo, about 2 mo later than I should have. Nasty stuff. Kathi

Response:

Like Kathy, I too take Amantadine and Zoloft.  I am unaware of any problems taking the two together!  I would be interested in knowing…..I was on Zoloft and Cylert for years when my Narcolepsy was active, no problems then and no one said anything about there being a problem or a law against it?   |     /|   —-    —–       |   /  |  |     |  |     |                      ~~~~~~~~BECK~~~~~~~~ |       |  |     |  |     |                   "Faith ends where worry begins" |       |   —-     —-

Hi Micky, Your Dr. said > " if I get rid of the fatigue the depression goes also"

I think, and have heard from others, that depression is a cause of fatigue!        Bill – Farmingdale, NY EMail  Hotwh…@specdata.com Instant Messages use   MrBill0726            ~|_             (_)_

Right you are, Bill.  Not only the depression itself causes lassitude but the messed up sleep patterns cause additional fatigue.   If one treats depression with an appropriate SSRI, and sometimes docs use a tricyclic like Elavil, remember that it takes them approximately 21 days to reach maximum blood level and begin to work at the optimum of that level.  Sometimes folks begin to feel better a little sooner but it still takes that long to get to the top of the dose being used.           L

Micky, Maybe.  And maybe if you got rid of your depression, your fatigue would improve.  I’m not saying it would go away, because MS fatigue is pretty pervasive and a widespread MS symptom.  However, depression also contributes to fatigue. Here are some questions that might help you decide if you are depressed? Does life seem worthless? Are you feeling that there is nothing interesting or worthwhile to do? Do you feel useless? Do you have trouble sleeping — particularly do you fall asleep and then wake up and are unable to go to sleep? Has your eating pattern changed — eating more, eating less? These are symptoms of depression.  There are several SSRI’s, and they all seem to have different side effects with different people. Sleepiness is one, but another drug may not have that side effect for you.  Perhaps it is time for a referral to a psychiatrist who has experience with the whole range of antidepressants. Good luck, Kate

Hi,   Once again I am coming to the group for some feedback. I had gotten off Paxil (did it every other day 2wks then stop) and the nurse had said they had samples of the ones I mentioned other people in this group recommended so I could try them. Well now she said the Dr says for me just to up my amantadine to 3x a day instead of 2x and see how that works.   His theory is if I get rid of the fatigue the depression goes also. I have my doubts about this. I have been having trouble since the 2nd day off the Paxil with the things ,some I didn’t even realize was a problem till it was gone! It just made me too sleepy!   I don’t know but I am determined I had enough last year and this one WILL be better!  Micky

Micky, There isn’t a law saying you can’t do Amantadine AND antidepressants! Are you on any of the ABCs?  The Interferons’ PRIMARY side effect is depression! Which can ONLY be treated with Antidepressants! BUT- Depression is SUCH a COMMON symptom of MS brain demyelination, that it cannot be dismissed! Amantadine is excellent for other symptomatic relief-ie, anti-viral properties, fatigue, and I used it to TRY and improve my cognitive function.  - hehe it didn’t, but hey, it was worth a try! I am re-starting it soon and I’ll see if my memory improves ANY! as well as Paxil, there is Prozac, Effexor, and Zoloft, as well as others that slip my mind at the moment!
