Oversleeping and oversleepiness; normalcy?

There are other reasons for feeling too sleepy.  Your thyroid levels might be low. You may have Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Immune Disorder.  You may have a chemical depression. Those things your GP CAN help you with. — Robin in Montana

I’d suspect an internist would do better — my experience with strict generalists is that they’re good with the general things but the least complexity stumps them.

See a sleep specialist.  Your family doctor will have no useful information on this subject, so INSIST on a referral to a sleep specialist.  A sleep specialist will be able to spot any sleeping disorders, and should be able to point you in the right direction for getting them fixed.         I am 14 years and have extreme trouble with oversleeping and sleepiness during the day, regardless of how much sleep I get. I do have minor depression, but realistically, only the perfect rich teenagers in the U.S. don’t.         I will sleep anywhere from 10-16 hours if not disturbed, and I am tired for about 95% of my time awake. Is this normal? Even if so, what can be done about it? What factors can contribute to sleep disorders like mine? Please reply…..                                                 J. Teenagers can need a lot sleep (I can remember sleeping 12 hours after a very hard day when I was your age) a lot but THAT is too much on a continuous basis: A couple of questions: 1) Do you snore? (ask your family, you wouldn’t know) 2) If you snore, do you ever gasp? 3) Do you have a large neck? 4) Does your father, grandfather, etc., have heart trouble? If any of these answers are "Yes", you may have something called "sleep apnea."  That’s something to be discussed with a doctor as it can make one very sick.

What you describe does not seem normal.  Charles Perrin’s post about sleep apnea are one possibility, but there are many others.  Whatever the cause, it is VERY IMPORTANT to identify the reason right away so that it can be dealt with at this very critical point in your life. While depression is a POSSIBLE cause, there are many potential PHYSICAL causes that should be ruled out first.  Certainly you should investigate possible sleep problems.  Your doctor should refer you to a sleep specialist, who will most likely want you to undergo a sleep study in an overnight stay at a sleep lab. Narcolepsy is another possible cause.  I have narcolepsy and sleep apnea. My narcolepsy began when I was 13 years old but was not diagnosed until I was 50.  Narcolepsy can begin at any age but begins at puberty for most narcoleptics.  For years I complained about always feeling tired, but no one seemed to understand how really serious it was and it remained undiagnosed.  Meanwhile I struggled through college and through most of my adult life.  I find myself wondering how my life would have been different had I been diagnosed and treated when I was still 13 or 14 instead of when I was in my 50s. I should add that, when I complained to my doctor about being tired all of the time, he thought I was depressed.  I did not accept that so I kept persisting in trying to find the cause.  I finally went to a sleep specialist/neurologist, who diagnosed my narcolepsy after I had a sleep study. So perhaps this will help you see why I urge you to persist in finding the cause.  It may be a sleep disorder (there are many others besides apnea and narcolepsy), it may be some other disease or disorder, it might even be depression, but you really need and deserve to know for certain so that you can suitably deal with it now, while you still have so much of your life ahead of you. Good luck and success in finding the cause.  Check other postings on this ng for additional ideas. Kent E.
