terror before you fall asleep

Question:

I find that before i fall asleep (when i am entering level 1 sleep), i tend to have a panic attack. My pulse will shoot up to about 140 bpm (it is normally 90), and i will feel terror & start sweating. This happens about 2 or 3 times a week. Does anyone know what sleep disorder this could be (if any). Also, my circidan rhythm is messed up. It isn’t the mainstream 1am-10am. Right now it is about 8pm-4am. From nov-dec 2001 it was about midnight-8am. Then january to september it was 6am-2pm, now it is moving up to about 8pm-4am. Because i have other daily activities i have moved it back to 11am-5pm for school, but if i don’t force myself ot wake up at 5pm everyday i start falling asleep at 2 or 3 pm.

it sounds like you need to find a sleep doctor and have a sleep study done to determine exactly what’s happening during your sleep.  It’s the only real way to find answers. There are probably a few different things that could be causing this to happen, even sleep apnea could cause you to wake up from stage one (or any stage) sleep like that. — Beth in Australia =================== FAQ for alt.support.sleep-disorder can be found here www.anchorweb.com.au/sleepdisorders this site is a work in progress – feel free to submit info/articles

I looked up night terrors at http://www.nightterrors.org/, but i get conflicting info on them. It says they occur in stage 4 sleep, but that they also happen 15-60 minutes after falling asleep. I don’t see how that can happen as stage 4 sleep doesn’t occur right after falling asleep. However, if he is right that night terrors occur within 1 hour of falling asleep then i think that is my best bet. I’m going to look up more information on this disorder. i also think i may have a mild form of Hypnagogic hallucinations. I get mild auditory hallucinations & disordered thoughts when i fall asleep.

not everybody’s sleep pattern is the same, some enter REM or stage 4 sleep very soon in the sleep process, often this is part of a sleep disorder called narcolepsy….. so while in a "normal" sleep pattern REM doesn’t happen until later in the sleep – it CAN occur at the beginning > i also think i may have a mild form of Hypnagogic hallucinations. This could indicate Narcolepsy. You really should see a certified sleep doctor – it’s the only way you’ll get any answers..
