Why can't I sleep????
Question:
It’s 0324 and I’m still awake!!! It’s been this way for the last several weeks. It’s driving me insane! I’ve tried Benedryl (100mgs), Ambien, Sonata, Muscle Relaxers and nothing is working…. I sleep from 0500 to whenever the kids wake me up… but I’m not refreshed. KWIM? All I want is sleep! Is there a dr that specializes in sleep disorders? If so, what is he/she called? Thanks Nicole

Hi Nicole, I am sorry, but I don”t remember if you are on prednisone or not. High amounts of pred will often make you wakeful. I hate it when I can’t sleep. It seems so lonely in the wee small hours of the morning when everyone else is sound asleep. I think there are sleep disorder clinics. J will have a website when she shows up. Where is our clever one anyway? BJ-freezing her prairie chicken legs in Saskatchewan "Nicole H" <nhightowerREM…@bak.rr.com> wrote in message

Hi Nicole, I was there a few weeks ago. I did not get to sleep until 5:00 AM. Everyone else was up and around at 8:00 AM, but I was dead until about noon. With me it was peripheral neuropathy from renal failure. Neurontin did the trick. There are sleep disorders clinics springing up in every major medical center in the U.S. Where do you live…Canada, U.S., Europe? The doctors are simply called sleep disorders specialists. They tried to send me to one a few years back, but I felt funny about sleeping in a bed at the clinic while being monitored, which is what you have to do if you want them to help you. Hi Nicole, A while back you mentioned that stopping the Adderall was causing you not to sleep right and you’ve since mentioned patches /caffeine etc. At the time, I couldn’t quite understand how Adderall could help you sleep anyways, since it’s an "upper", so is caffeine. Unless you were taking this stuff in the a.m. and then zoom/zooming around with all that energy created by the med and tiring you out and since now stopped, you don’t expend as much energy? Ambien and Sonata are meds to help a person fall asleep (hypnotics). That treats one form of insomnia. Some people find that Benadryl (sp?) does the same thing. Never worked for me, pills nor liquid, but then I don’t have problems falling asleep. It’s staying asleep that’s the problem (due to complicated issues). The other kind of insomnia is the "early wakeup" type. Muscle relaxants like Soma, or A/Ds like Elavil can "cause" or worsen breathing problems like Sleep apnea (because muscles are req’d for breathing). sometimes apnea a cause of early wakeups. That and Restless Leg Syndrome and Narcolepsy can be checked/confirmed at a Sleep Disorders Lab. Some labs here operate out of hospitals by pulmonologists. (I trust these more) Some sleep labs are privately owned, and their usual goal is to try a person on CPAP. Some claim to know about medications, yet the one I saw, had very little to offer, once we reviewed the meds that I’d tried and the difficulties with each. I think it’s fine to get checked for some of the known sleep disorders, if you want to . But first perhaps, have a chat again with your doctors about your meds, your sleep hygiene, maybe keep a diary of what meds you take, how long you sleep, what time you go to bed, what you notice when you wake up (messed up bedclothes, gasping for air or anything unusal like that). I don’t know if one should stop their meds before having a sleep test (otherwise they blur the picture) and/or have one test w/o the meds, then one test another night with meds and see the differences if any. When I talked to the local Lupie lady, she said she’s been on Elavil for about 12 years. It helps with pain and long-term sleep, as long as a person doesn’t have another sleep disorder (which I have). http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/sleepdisorders.html See the one called "Brain Basics". It explains the basic sleep problems, but it doesn’t cover early wakeups and/or complicated issues. There’s other links/info there too..but my computer is locking up for some reason, so gotta go do a "reboot" HTH J – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Nicole H wrote: > It’s 0324 and I’m still awake!!! how’s about Trazadone? Do you go right to bed when you take Ambien or Sonata? They have *very* short half-lives and if you put off going to bed you can essentially wake back up – especially with the sonata. You can combine one of these two with Trazadone as well – the Ambien will help you go to sleep, the Trazadone will get you into deep Stage 4 sleep. Check into it. I take Ambien then put on headphones and listen to a mellow CD. If I don’t listen to the music I end up listening to all the little voices in my head <maniacal laughter>. >All I want is sleep! You should be able to locate "sleep clinics" in your local telephone directory.

Hi Nicole, See KC is right on it with the meds. If you decide to check sleep clinics, some people camcord themselves for a few nights, ahead of time, sometimes it helps the sleep doctors to see what’s happening at home because in the sleep lab it’s a "foreign" environment and they hook up wires and stuff to lets, arms, chest, head. Anyways, hope you get it figured out. J – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Nicole H wrote: > It’s 0324 and I’m still awake!!! It’s been this way for the last several > weeks. Hi Bruce, Glad you got some help with your hip. Ouch ! that sounds painful. He jumped on it ? LOL Anyhow, the winning numbers are probably none of the numbers on my ticket LOL Saw the other night where an already rich businessman, won his 2nd big lottery in less than a year. Seems like from talking to the sellers at variety stores, it’s the ones who play big every week who win. Talking like 100’s or even 1,000’s of tickets ($$$) at a time. Big risk. Well, best of luck to you and me. hi rothnie, Do you really wish to win the super7. One of our employees at the Inn won 2 million in the california Lottery and is still working. Her sister dropped off 2 kids for her to raise, her husbands former wife sued her for part of the lottery and she was deluged with friends[?[ wanting loans. She is living from paycheck to paycheck. She has a great attitude and is buying tickets each week hoping to win again. By the way I haven’t been able to put my 2 cents in because of infected eyes and everything is still a blur. Luckily I have a friend who reads me the posts. ruth – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Hi Jean:)) You are such a good researcher! > Now if you could give me the winning super 7 for this long weekend???:))) > Hope you have a great weekend. > Bruce On.
