Advise requested: Serious problems with doctor

Unfortunately, the sleep sciences are still so new that many physicians do not recognize them. My father-in-law has severe sleep apnea, and has recently had a heart bypass by a nationally acclaimed cardiologist. Following the bypass, my father-in-law’s apnea thrives untreated. If you belong to an HMO, you might be up the creek. In the HMO a physician may actually be savvy of sleep disorders, but will feign ignorance to avoid referring you out to a sleep specialist. That’s how they operate, you know. You can always write a letter and enclose some damning documentation about sleep apnea. You could also patronize and cottle and cringe and cower and go up to the doc and play off his insecurities and loss of wonder by saying, "Wow! Doc! I just came across these articles on sleep apnea! Holy cow! What do you think? I would be interested in your opinion? What do you have to say? Thank you so much for being you!" >2- What type of specialist should attend to get at least this >unpleasant apnea under control? I am clueless as what to do now.
