amnesia and apnea

Question:

My father has recently had a number of episodes recently when he woke in the middle of the night to go to the loo and when he came back to bed he could not remember where or when he was. He recognised my mother and after a while most other things came back to him. Obviously this has been very upsetting for both them and me. He went to the doctor who said that pre senile dementia did not come on that suddenly and allayed their fears to an extent. The doctor thinks its due to hardening of the arteries. Then he had another episode last night. My mother called me this morning very upset. She lives in Wales and I live in London so the only thing I think of that might help was to get on the net. To be honest I’d not heard of apnea till and hour ago when I did a search on the net. Then 10 minutes ago my mother called me back and I mentioned apnea to her. She said "oh yes your father has that all the time". All 3 episodes seem to have had "muzzy" headaches with them. My family has a history of migraine, night paralysis and night sweats and I have suffered from these on and off since I was 4. I’ve told her to call the doctor again on Monday and this time to mention the fact that my father stops breathing during the night. In the mean time can anyone help with information. Many thanks Ray. I will look at these now. Trying to talk to my father is not easy. I told him to mention apnea when he goes to the doctor this week – his response is what will the doctor say? "who’s the doctor here?" Fortunately my mother is insisting on going with him and, like most of the women in the family, she is not someone to trifle with. PLEASE, PLEASE pay attention to this!!!  Based on the comments from your mother, your father almost certainly has sleep apnea.  It’s EXTREMELY critical he see a sleep specialist about this as soon as possible. Why do I say this?  Well, one of the devastating results of obstructive sleep apnea is an increase in blood pressure, and increasing risk of cardiovascular disease (including STROKES !!).  Lack of oxygen (due to not breathing) to the brain can cause some memory loss.  Small silent strokes can also cause this problem.  So please be certain you and your mother get your father to a sleep specialist.  You obviously don’t want this to advance any farther.
