mild sleep apnea
Question:
Thyroid symptoms can look like some sleep apena symptoms. From what I have heard, thyroid conditions cannot cause sleep apnea, but thyroid problems can cause similar symptoms to sleep apnea and exacerbate the sleep apena situation (if it exists). This is something to be checked out. Ask for a thyroid blood test. This is not part of the normal blood screening tests. /Marshall mmth…@attglobal.net – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -redhea…@pop.dnvr.uswest.net wrote: > Hi all > I was diagnosed w/mild sleep apnea. I had fatigue and weight gain and was diagnosed with apnea last fall. After going on CPAP I felt better but continued to have brain fog and couldn’t loose the weight in spite a poor appetite. After some research I asked to have my thyroid checked and found that I was slightly hypo thyroid (TSH of 6.2). This was considered very mild and the doctor told me that treatment was optional but I went forward with it. It took a while to ramp up the thyroid hormone and each time we increased the dose my apnea would get much better and I’d go off of CPAP for a few days until it got worse again. I’ve been at full strength for about a month now and I’ve been off CPAP and feeling fine (plus I’ve lost five pounds). There are a number of studies that have looked at the link between thyroid and apnea. Some have found a strong link and some have found no link at all. None of the doctors I’ve spoken with were aware of any of this research or the findings or the potential link between thyroid problems and apnea until I provided them with documentation. One important point . . . many GP’s will not treat a TSH of less 5. Current research is starting to show that a TSH of greater than 2 should be treated if there are any other symptoms, and I consider my OSA to be a symptom. I didn’t stay better until my TSH was less than 2. The studies at medline found that it can take up to a year for Thyroid induced apnea to clear up completely. I haven’t had a follow up sleep study yet so I can’t swear that the apnea is completely gone, but six months ago my wife was asking me to sleep in the guest room because of my snoring and now I don’t snore at all. I can tell that my soft palate is tighter and I have dreams at night so I know I’m sleeping pretty well even if the apnea isn’t completely gone. Here are some URL’s that were forwarded to me, if you look at the related studies there has been a lot of work in this area: These guys conclude that 3 people were helped with thyroid therapy and that it fixed their nocturnal sleep disordered breathing. They further conclude that screening for thyroid problems is cost effective and worthwhile thing to do. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov:80/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubM… another article in support to relationship with OSA and thyroid problems. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov:80/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubM… Good Luck, Stuart – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -redhea…@pop.dnvr.uswest.net wrote: > Hi all > I was diagnosed w/mild sleep apnea. Hi all I was diagnosed w/mild sleep apnea. If what I have is mild, Id sure hate to have severe! I feel like crap ALOT. I didnt find out from my ENT what causes the apnea. Is this something he would have found out in the report???? (and not discussed w/me) Ive had so many funky symptons that make me believe I have a thyroid cond. possibly. I am going to go to a specialist, even though my blood tests are normal. My question, can thyroid related problems cause sleep apnea? My dr. didnt seem to think my body temp problems are related to apnea….If so, just direct me in the right direction for a web-site! Thanks

Generally, they don’t (other than to determine if it’s obstructive sleep apnea or central sleep apnea). Figuring out where the blockage occurs is a matter of trial and error (mostly error, given that the great majority of attempts to clear them surgically fail from what I’ve heard people tell). — Your mouse has moved. Windows must be restarted for the change to take effect. Reboot now? [OK]

I have read there is a connection between thyroid and sleep apnea issues. also I have recently been diagnosed with both conditions. If you are overweight from hypothyroid or have a nodule putting pressure on throat – makes sense that it effects the throat. The usual lack of energy related to both will be interesting to sort out. <redhea…@pop.dnvr.uswest.net> wrote in message
