Terrified!

Question:

TO: fryfo…@gol.com SUBJECT: Re: Terrified! If I were to make an educated guess, you have a severe case of sleep apnea, just like I did. I suspect you also have morning headaches, get up frequently to urinate during the evening (when you should be sleeping), still wake up tired, have little energy, suffer from excessive daytime drowsiness… If you don’t have all of these symptoms in addition to the snoring and gasping for breath, you soon will have. Your airway is being obstructed, usually by the collapse of the tissues of the soft palate and throat.  The snoring is the sound of forcing air through the obstructions.  Because it doesn’t all get there, there are periods when you literally quit breathing (an apnea is the absence of breathing for 10 seconds or more), then your brain signals your body and you tense up enough to open the airway and gasp to get oxygen.  Your heart is put under a strain, and may even stop at times, and your blood oxygen level drops to dangerous levels. Try looking at the sleep apnea site at HTTP://world.std.com/~halberst and then follow some of the other sleep site links.  Also back date into this newsgroup and read more of the older postings. Good luck.  Let me know if I can be of more help. Dave Dave Hargett, DRCT…@Prodigy.com Illinois Patient Coordinator for Wake Up America A.W.A.K.E. Coordinator – Elk Grove Village IL group

I cannot diagnose you, but I suggest you see a doctor and ask him about the possibility of SLEEP APNEA.  A SLEEP TESTING CENTER can diagnose you and many hospitals in the US in major metropolitan areas have them.  don’t know about JAPAN.           I am not a doctor or in the mediacl field, but what you described are the same syptoms that I and many others in this group have described. Go see a doctor, an Ears, Nose and Throat Specialist, or a sleep center soon.  BTW:  SURGERY is NOT the only alternative.  If your doctor diagnoses you with Obstructive Sleep Apnea, get it confirmed at a Sleep Testing Center and have them go over all the treatment options with you. —-CHUCK in Dallas

I sure hope someone here can help me out.  Here’s what’s happening. Nearly five or six times a month I suddenly start choking and sit up in bed gasping for breath.  I feel as though I were slowly being suffocated and caught myself just before dying.  Needless to say, this scares the hell out of me.  I feel like one night I will go to sleep and never wake.  Might not be such a bad way to die, but I am happily married with a wonderful child and too much to look forward to. Here are a couple of facts that may or may not help anyone attempting to diagnos my problem.  I am overweight by nearly 100 pounds.  I know this is a contributing factor and that the solution to my problem may simply be to loose the weight.  Also, I snore.  A lot.  Loudly.  But, somehow my wife sleeps through it…did I mention I was happily married?  8) Seriously, I could use any information I can get.  I am an American living in Japan, so information is hard to come by.  Thank God for the Internet! I would appreciate responses by email if possible, but I will definitely check back here. Thanks
