I’m no expert on this, but if you mean a respirologist when you say a breathing doctor, that’s who referred me to a sleep clinic. There are several other kinds of doctors who specilize in sleep disorders who could also refer you to a sleep lab. As far as what to tell your doctor, tell him or her all of the symptoms you have been experiencing, even if you don’t think they are related. Let him or her sort them out. Mike Hogan

Hi LB – The doctor who diagnosed my sleep apnea was a pulmonologist. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a breathing problem, as you probably know. However, neither he nor a second pulmonologist diagnosed my narcolepsy; that was diagnosed by a neurologist. Neurologists have a better background for diagnosing sleep disorders related to the central nervous system, such as restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, central sleep apnea, etc. Also, psychiatrists trained in sleep disorders are useful when certain medications are involved or when there might be a psychological element involved. So which doctor is best may depend on what your disorder is, although a good doctor in any field know his limitations and should be prepared to make referrals where necessary.
