NOCTURNAL MYOCLONUS

Question:

You’re not alone. PLMS (Periodic Leg Movement during Sleep) affects approximately 5% of the population. Sometimes called PLMD (Periodic Limb Movement Disorder) or RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome), all are sleep/movement disorders and can be treated (but not cured) with medication. Look at www.rls.org/ for the homepage of the Restless Leg Syndrome Foundation. Plenty of info there, along with links to related sites, concerning your situation.

Response:

I have said this before, and I will say it again: A host of Harvard University sleep specialists were certain that I had Nocturnal Myoclonis. When medication for that turned me into a zombie, they treated me for periodic limb movements with sinemet and valproic acid. When this turned me into a zombie, and didn’t work. I stopped altogether. Nine years later, a lowly pulmonologist in Santa Cruz California noted that i had 51 apneas per hour, and put me on a CPAP. Funny thing!  Once my body stopped oxygenating at a mere 35% and was getting all the air it needs, (98%), my legs and arms stopped shaking. And they shook while I was awake, too. But I do have some huge resentments against Respironics. Fanne in santa cruz. Sure, you’re not alone with that disorder! A number of the sleep lab patients I see have nocturnal myoclonus. What medication are you taking that helps? Dan Weinhold
