PLMD — Changes once properly medicated?

Question:

I noticed it over time. It took quite a while to make up my sleep deficit, and as I did so life gradually improved. So did my temper and I am no longer requiring medication for depression. I really only required a low level of meds, and the meds given to me produced a terrible reaction, so I quit taking them and on Doc’s advice am self-medicating with OTC products (chiefly benadryl and melatonin, alternately) until such a time as that no longer works for me. Then we’ll explore other options. But I also made some other changes, and I believe these changes made the most difference in my life: I got more active, learned about sleep hygiene, learned about my disorders and what worked for me to make them manageable. I worked hard on nutrition and diet, lost weight, and developed a quieting routine at night that I found soothing. I also am teaching my kids to A) go to bed on time –they’re all night owls. B) Not disturb me after a certain time unless someone is bleeding, we have an intruder, the house is on fire, or there’s vomit involved. C) To develop their own sleep routine so that when the time comes they too will be able to easily handle the same disorder—both hubby and I suffer, so they are bound to do so too. For most of us, that means a warm bath, reading until a certain time, and then lights out. Significantly  changed. My husband can no longer claim that I hunt dear with a Dodge Caravan. My reflexes have vastly improved. The deer still jump in from of me while driving, occaisionally, but I don’t kill them or my car anymore :) I’m wakeful and easily so during the day, and have recently been able to return to a highly complex job that requires significant careful attention and brainpower. That was all mostly due to lifestyle changes.
