Hi G Welcome to the newsgroup. There is a syndrome called REM Behavior Disorder (I think — anybody help?) in which the person acts out what he is dreaming. Kind of rare. More likely your friend is exhibiting a variant of sleepwalking. Sleepwalkers do some pretty amazing things while asleep: walk up and down stairs, make sandwiches, etc. I suggest you do a search in deja.com and/or remarq.com for discussion of sleepwalking in the sleep-disorder forums.
