You have a very good sleep centre in Ottawa at the Royal Ottawa Hospital. Have a look at their web site at http://www.rohcg.on.ca/mentalhealth/sleep/sleep.html Regards, Lee — Lee Babcock Toronto in the GWN

Lea…. in Toronto, we can get a sleep study appointment in about two days. Must be overload in Ottawa caused by all the policticians who can’t sleep from guilt! <vbg> Regards, Lee — Lee Babcock Toronto in the GWN

Hi, I am a 42 year old, suffering the past 20 years or so of insomnia. Virtually every night I wake up around 2 – 3 am. and rarely fall back to sleep, or if I do, I am not rested at all. I tried different medications: tryptophan (available only in Canada), paxil, trazadone etc. but without any success. I also tried accupuncture and herbal treatment from chinese doctors – with little (temporary) success. If anyone knows of a sleep disorder specialist in Ottawa, Toronto or Montreal area please let me know. Alternately, perhaps you have some advice for me???? Thank you.

Hi, I am assuming that you’ve never had a sleep test (to evaluate you for sleep apnea or RLS)? http://www.css.to/sleep/centers.htm (specialists in any of the cities that you mention). If nothing is found there, perhaps they will have some medication suggestions (that will keep you asleep). Some types work for one person but not for others. (tricyclics, SSRI’s, Benzodiazepines, etc). Perhaps you are being given the wrong combinations? (I don’t know for which purpose you are taking Trazadone, since it is used for several reasons). There are a number of websites which have partial lists of what consists of good sleep hygiene. This is one http://www.sleepfixer.com/sleephygiene.html http://www.lutheranhealthnetwork.com/sleep/hygiene.htm http://www.talkaboutsleep.com/basics/sleep_hygiene.htm Can’t emphasize enough that each person has to find their own combination of what works and what doesn’t but in particular, less stimulation (physical and mental)…winding down through a ritual of sorts (take care of issues of the day ..in your head…and unresolved ones, write on a paper "to do tomorrow", warm bath, light snack, turn off the phone, avoid stimulating conversations, etc etc. Part of the work involves you telling us (or a doctor) what you think is causing the early wakeups. Do you go to bed at the same time every night? Do you get a certain amount of exercise every day? Are you unhappy with your current lifestyle or job? Is there something troubling you? (these are rhetoricals that you may or may not wish to answer on the newsgroup, but will help perhaps sort out what the cause is. HTH Stick around. Lots of good advice/people here

There are sleep disorder units at the General and Civic sites of the Ottawa Hospital as well as at the Royal Ottawa Hospital. There is also a local clinic associated with Dr. Moldofski’s (sp?) Toronto clinic. In order to get seen by one of the physicians your family doctor will need to make a referal. Of course, as usual there is quite a wait, first to see the doctor and then to spend a night for the study. HTH, Lea — Lea V. Usin ac…@ncf.ca
