Need sleep – simple help needed.
Question:
I am in no way as seriously afflicted with the major sleep disorders that many on this list have, but I sure could use some advice on getting better sleep. I can never sleep through the night, but need to get up for an hour or so before I can get another few hours. I get 6 to 7 hours a night, total, but think I need another one or two hours to feel better and more awake during the day. Is there a place where I can get some simple, helpful tips to get better sleep? Can anyone throw a few ideas my way? With no insurance, and little money, going to sleep specialists and getting tested is just not going to happen. I also think that for myself, it is not necessary. I am just not sure what works best in getting a good nights sleep. Thanks for any help, Bob Durango

Robert, Here are the URLs for some sites that have tips on sleeping. Generally this is referred to as ’sleep hygiene’, if you wish to do a search for the topic. http://www.smmc.com/sleep/tips.html http://www.news.cornell.edu/science/March97/tomorrow.html http://www.hbmc.org/lev3.cfm/298 (note: this site was unavailable when I checked it just now. I don’t know if this is just a temporary situation or not.) Without having seen a Doctor or having had a sleep test how can you rule out having a sleep disorder? I woke up during the night once or twice as my apnea got worse last year (before I was tested). If possible have someone watch you sleep to see if you might be gasping for air or other things. > Is there a place where I can get some simple, helpful tips to get better sleep? > Can anyone throw a few ideas my way?
Kent has posted some things that may help. You can also try taking the Herbs Kava and Valerian. Please note it may take several weeks taking these to help. > With no insurance, and little money, going to sleep specialists and getting > tested is just not going to happen. Have you gone to the County health department? If you have low income and no insurance it would be better than nothing. > Thanks for any help, > Bob Durango

Robert, That newsgroup is dominated by the apneac group…. and if that is not your problem (and unless you are a loud snorer or very overweight you have no reason to think so), why not do some of the things listed in books on insomnia? You know, avoid caffeine, warm milk before bed, don’t exercise within 4 to 6 hours of bedtime, do something boring before going to sleep, if you wake up and can’t sleep get out of bed, yadda yadda yadda. There are many good books with these basics and if I were you I’d head to the local library and look up "insomnia" or "sleeplessness." If you are your garden variety insomniac, you will find going to a sleep dr. a total waste of time as well as expensive. OK. hope that helps. Bun Bunst…@aol.com

I have a couple suggestions for you. First, a concise list of helpful sleep tips can be found at http://www.sleepsoundly.com/sleeptips.htm. The other thing is that I’ve found 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) to be a safe, natural supplement to help induce sleep with no side effects upon wakening. You should be able to find a bottle of 90 capsules that are 50 mg. for about $25. Most people use from 1 to 3 capsules 20 minutes before bedtime. Good luck!
