Trazodone

Question:

Since I was not depressed, I do not like the idea of a doctor prescribing a medication hoping that I will be efected by the side effects. Well I think you are misjudging your doctor. Many drugs are used primarily for one purpose but are very useful for another, not approved, use, i.e., the shots many of us are using contain drugs approved only for other uses such as cardiac problems.

I would tend to agree with the responder.  I use various drugs for "side effects" to treat other conditions–Elavil in chronic pain (usually an antidepressant), Tofranil for incontinence (also an antidepressant), and Sudafed for incontinence (usually a decongestant).  Zoloft (another antidepressant) is used with fair success to treat premature ejaculation. This is part of the ‘art’ of medicine… David L. Casey, MD Denton Urology http://www.wp.com/dlcasey/urology/homeuro.htm

Response:

I know it is none of my business but what can it be that bothers you about this approach?  If it works, why be bothered. Viagra’s value as an anti impotence drug was discovered while the drug was being tested as a heart disease treatment.   I think you will find that many medications have been found to have beneficial side effects. Although it’s value is questionable, look at Rogaine for instance it is nothing but a watered down version of a blood pressure medication called Minoxidil. If every doctor had all the answers at hand then we would need very few of them.  Of course for those of us who are convinced that we have the answers  before we go to the doctor’s office I doubt that we will ever trust one who does not agree with our preconceived notions. — Cecil Britton Delete ‘rem’ from email address before replying. Over the last several weeks I have come across several posts mentioning the use of Trazodone as an aid in ED. My Primary Care Doctor recently prescribed this drug for me. I am to take a 50 mg pill every night at bed time and if I know in advance I should take it one hour before intercourse. He said I should try this before my visit to the URO. Upon geting the presecription filled I found out that the drug is an antidepressent and listed as a possible side effect " in males prolonged, inappropiste, or painful erections." Since I was not depressed, I do not like the idea of a doctor prescribing a medication hoping that I will be efected by the side effects. I think I am going to find another primary care doctor if my HMO will let me.

Response:

A little over a year ago my doctor prescribed Trazadone for depression and sleep disorder.  Over a period of time, he had me work up to 300 mg.  All of it at bedtime.  Actually, it was impossible to stay awake after about 30 minutes.  At first, I did experience some heightened penile function.  Which was not undesirable. However, over time, that affect diminished. I am posting this information for feedback from people who have experience with any of the above mentioned meds.  I read, in this newsgroup, that Zoloft inhibits the sex drive.  Since depression also can inhibit sex drive, it seems I am caught in a proverbial catch 22.

I have been prescribed with trazodone as an adjunct to yohimbine for my ED. I responded very well to yohimbine but experience some side effects with trazodone. I have elaborated it in my other post of the same day to this ng. I do have a harder and longer lasting erection with trazodone but it inhibits my ejaculation. The sex drive is still there, my penis is still hard but it is very difficult to reach orgasm. My doctor said that he has never come across anyone who experienced this side effect with trazodone. However, after having read your post, I think my response is normal. Trazodone is also anti-depressant and it should also have ejaculation-inhibiting effects. I am now only taking trazodone 50mg before sleep every other day.

Response:

I read in today’s newspaper that trazodone is being used as a cure for ED, but I could find very little about trazodone on the web.  Could someone provide more information:  What is the usual dose?  Is it effective? what are side effects?

I have been prescribed with trazodone for my ED, and it is to be taken in combination with yohimbine. I respond very well to yohimbine and my doctor gave me trazodone to strength its effects. Trazodone does give me a harder, longer lasting erection on top of the effects of yohimbine but I experience a lot of side effects. First of all, its sedative effects are terrible. I will fall asleep within an hour after taking a small dose of merely 50mg. After having taken it continuously for three days or so, I find it very hard to ejaculate. This adverse effect disappears after I stop taking it. I am now only taking 50mg every other day before I go to sleep. My doctor’s original prescription was 100 mg per day, 50mg 2 times a day. However, there is no way that I would take it after lunch in the middle of the day cos I would doze off in no time. On top of that I don’t see how I can ever have an orgasm if I take 100 mg trazodone per day.

Response:

I have personal experience with both of these drugs.. I also currently take traz. at night along with desiprimine for depression.. I’ve taken Zoloft in the past.. I’m sort of unclear about what it is you want to know, but perhaps I can help.         Most (but not all) antidepressants cause increased difficulty in reaching a climax, among them Zoloft. Apart from that, less well documented, but quite evident anecdotally, most of them seem to cause a waning sex *desire* over a period of time, and thirdly, increased difficulty in producing a really stiff erection. Fun, huh? I am 49 and have now been taking testosterone shots for a couple years (I was at the bottom line of normal range) and find them great. Viaga helps me have better erections when it’s important, and desiprimine I find to be a superior antidepressant (I’ve taken *many* of them) and much kinder to sex life. I have somewhat delayed orgasms, but nothing like the arm-aching problems I had with Zoloft or Prozac. Let me know if there’s something else you want to know.. also, you might check out: "soc.support.depression.treatment"

Response:

All of my adult life, I have suffered from ED and delayed ejaculation.  I have tried, with some success, injections.  Currently, I have a prescription for Viagra.  It is sometimes successful, and certainly more natural than an injection.  Since I am physically a very fit fifty-three year old, I feel that my ED problem is largely psychological. Because I was having difficulty functioning in the morning….too sleepy,  I asked the doctor to switch my prescription to Zoloft.  Because of the sleep disorder, I currently take both meds.  50 mg of Trazodone at night and the Zoloft in the morning. I am posting this information for feedback from people who have experience with any of the above mentioned meds.  I read, in this newsgroup, that Zoloft inhibits the sex drive.  Since depression also can inhibit sex drive, it seems I am caught in a proverbial catch 22. Any thoughts or ideas are welcomed.

Response:

I am constantly on yohimbine for almost 2 months now. During my holidays I tried to take trazodone again. 50 mg after supper and 25 mg before bedtime. Usually the sedation does not set in until one or two hours later. Like you said, the erection is much harder. I am very sure that it’s due to trazodone.

Good. Glad it’s finally starting to help. However, after two or three days I found that my ejaculation was grossly delayed. It was so difficult to come that I was almost unable to come just by thrusting. I stopped for a day and my ability to come returned. From then on I was only taking trazodone on alternate days. My erection is harder and my ejaculation is delayed, but too seriously so.

Sounds like you’ve worked out a good balance. This is difficult to do but well worth it, I think. So what do you think about my present schedule of taking trazodone?

It sounds great. Thanks a lot for you info. It certainly helps. I mean, all the discussions in this ng seem to centre upon viagra or injection and seldom are yohimbine and trazodone being discussed. In November viagra will be available here and my doctor has asked me to try. However, if the cheaper yohimbine and trazodone work for me then I don’t need to rely on the more expensive viagra.

Exactly! And until one has experienced a Yohimbine erection and ejaculation then one just hasn’t experienced all that sex has to offer. For me it returns the inevitability phase where you know you’re going to cum and, for practical terms, there’s no way you’re going to stop it. Almost like an involuntary reaction toward the end.  I like it. Enjoy!

Response:

Sorry that I did not reply earlier. I was away on holiday and did not see this until today. much longer but I, too, don’t care for a purple dick, I lose sensation, probably could never ejaculate. I work for a balance.  Pink

I can ejaculate with a ring but still it feels so unnatural… dick (sometime’s it does get a little bluish I guess) and an extra ten to 15 minutes erection.

A ring can give me a really hard erection that lasts for at least 30 minutes. I have tried penetration all the way to ejaculation with a ring. Nevertheless, I don’t like that ‘overinflated’ feeling. 100mg! He’s obviously never taken it. I’m used to this stuff and 100mg would put me to sleep with a naked Playboy Bunny next to me. (True, I’d probably wake up with a humungous erection and she’d have a smile on her face but I’d sleep thru it.)

Yes, you are right. I would never take 100 mg. It’s crazy. 25mg with lunch. 25mg with supper (maybe). 25mg 30 minutes before bedtime. That’s workable with the Yohimbine. Remember that the Yohimbine is producing the erection and the Traz merely acts to maintain it longer. Assuming most of your sex is at bedtime (dangerous assumption, I know) when was your most recent Yohimbine taken? Try it 30 minutes before?

Yes, I saw the effect just overnight after taking it. Maybe this time yohimbine is already built up in my system. balance to learn but, at least in my case, it’s well worth it. I still wonder about a different size ring for you though.

So what do you think about my present schedule of taking trazodone? Is the doctor sure your problem is venous leakage? If memory serves, Traz works by shutting down something or other in the mechanism (pipe line) that directs blood out of the penis.

No, they could not find out any causes for my ED. I’ll be watching for any repost you make. Hope my little bit of knowledge helps some. Good luck.

What the heck is Yohimbine????

It’s the perscription, very concentrated form of Yohimbe.  Didn’t do a thing for my man.

Response:

I have tried using a ring before I got on yohimbine. My penis felt so cold and the glans turned a slightly bluish colour that was so frightening. I don’t know if I want to try that again…..

Sounds like it was too small for you. I gather that some people need or prefer what you’re describing but I like just a little bit of pressure. Sometimes’s I’ll use a 1 1/4" ring but most of the time I go to the 1 1/2". True, going smaller (tighter) will help keep one erect much longer but I, too, don’t care for a purple dick, I lose sensation, probably could never ejaculate. I work for a balance.  Pink dick (sometime’s it does get a little bluish I guess) and an extra ten to 15 minutes erection. Maybe it’s longer sometimes. That can give me a half hour to 45 minute erection some times. More than that I’d probably have a heart attack from too much fun anyway. other day I felt confident enough in my knowledge of Viagra to take half a traz 30 minutes before the Viagra (to lower my bp really; the Viagra was an after thought), and came out of the bedroom wondering if the Traz really made that much difference or if it was a co-incidence. I did stay up longer. Oh I see… so trazodone works very well for you…

Yes. Full stomach after dinner. The doctor asked me to take it three times a day but I just couldn’t cos I would fall asleep at work! I was taking whole 50mg once a day after dinner. I took it for a week and then stopped. My doctor asked me to try 100mg per day at night for 2 weeks yesterday. I am yet to start…..

100mg! He’s obviously never taken it. I’m used to this stuff and 100mg would put me to sleep with a naked Playboy Bunny next to me. Assuming most of your sex is at bedtime (dangerous assumption, I know) when was your most recent Yohimbine taken? Try it 30 minutes before? I think I have not taken it long enough… how long did it take for you to see trazodone’s effects?

You really don’t want to hear this but I believe it’s a matter of hours. The stuff is in your system in adequate amounts? Then it works. The question is how much is an adequate amount and can one maintain an adequate amount and stay awake at the same time. And, if one is staying awake can the pulse race enough (heart pump hard enough with all this Traz slowing you down) to generate an erection? Normally, yes, but if one is too sedated from the Traz…  Yeah, it’s a tough balance to learn but, at least in my case, it’s well worth it. I still wonder about a different size ring for you though. Is the doctor sure your problem is venous leakage? If memory serves, Traz works by shutting down something or other in the mechanism (pipe line) that directs blood out of the penis. Response:

Thanks for your info and reply. Years ago I started on Yohimbine and had great results with it. Not only did I have an increased libido but there were times it seemed like my penis had a spring in it. It would just pop up there and be really hard. Didn’t last too long but it was adequate. Same here. With yohimbine I can last long enough to accomplish penetration. With some efforts 90% of the time I can last until ejaculation, although I must say that it could be better, and easier.

Since you’re doing so well with the Yohimbine I’d have to wonder if using a ring might give you exactly what you’re looking for without the complications of Trazodone. I doubt if any of us in this news group will ever find anything that’s 100%, 100% of the time but a ring has worked wonders for me a few times. I’d give that serious thought if I were you. I gather one can pick up fancy one’s at sex toy shops and the WWW but I just got mine at Home Depot out of the plumbing department. consistently. Trazodone became my "fun" pill because the erection would stay up so much longer. Great combination. But… That’s what my doctor said, but the sedation is awful. What dosage of trazodone were you on? I am on 75mg per day.

Same. 75 to 100mg. Frankly I don’t use it much any more for sex. I’ll pop 1/2 of a 50mg once or twice during the day to help control problem blood pressure and then a 50 at bedtime to help me sleep. However, the other day I felt confident enough in my knowledge of Viagra to take half a traz 30 minutes before the Viagra (to lower my bp really; the Viagra was an after thought), and came out of the bedroom wondering if the Traz really made that much difference or if it was a co-incidence. I did stay up longer. "Traz WILL help prolong (maybe cause) an erection. As long as one keeps moving (mowing the lawn; playing baseball; really active sex) you won’t be very affected by its sleep inducing qualities. Once you lay down in bed though – you’re a goner." I can’t imagine moving around with trazodone. Usually I can’t help but fall asleep approximately one hour after I have taken trazodone. Nothing can stop it!

When and how are you taking the Traz? Time of day. 1/2 or whole. Empty stomach or full? A little bit of resistance does build up so that you’re not so senstivie to the sleep inducing effects but I doubt that you’ll ever conquor it completely. However, my advice to a patient and determined man would be to not give up on the therapy combination too easily. That’s what my doctor said. He asked me to take up to 100 mg a day and see if I would find my erections harder and lasting longer. How long did it take for you to develop tolerance towards trazodone’s sedative effects?

Sorry, but I’ve been taking it for too many years to remember how the tolerance route went for me. Remember that even though I’ve built up some tolerance to it large doses will still put me to bed in the afternoon or whenever. I could probably handle 25mg three times daily but more than that I’d have to take a nap and then I’d fall into a deep sleep. What’s wrong with sex in the afternoon? Take the Yohimbine three times daily. Mix in half a tab when you take the Yohimbine. Let it build up in your system slowly. Don’t take one at bedtime or confine your chances for intercourse to the non-sleeping times of the day. I am taking yohimbine 5.4 mg three times a day. Sometimes I will have a spontaneous erection about one hour aftering taking the pill and the feelings are great! My penis feels fuller all the time after I am on yohimbine (I’ve been on it for about 1 1/2 months.) and rock hard erections are much easier to come by. Penetration is now not a problem, although making it last still is. I have to use a lot of efforts to make it last until ejaculation.

You really have to give a ring a try! Experiment. I’ve had really great success with it in the past but became very susceptible to its side effects after a while. That probably had more to do with other factors(getting out of shape physically) than with a cumulative effect from Y+T. I thought one would develop tolerance after taking them for a while…..

I wish. On it’s best days Yohimbine was the best thing sexually I’d ever taken. Better even than Viagra because it helped my erections AND libido. But, the side effects eventually got to me. But, as I recall, I also started having trouble with a nasty temper that had a connection with Yohimbine. That came after using it for a year or so. Doesn’t sound very good….

No. Keep an eye on that. Maybe your SO can be alerted to watch for a pattern and warn you if you start to have that problem. Again, it’s a pretty safe combination (but see below) to play with as long as your doctor is involved. Play with different combinations as to timing of doses and the doses involved. Yoh and Traz have produced some fantastic sex for me in the past. My doctor told me that trazodone could produce some very long lasting erections. I am yet to experience that.

Based on my experience I’d have to agree with the doctor. Kind of puzzling why you haven’t seen anything from the traz except dreams. Really curious to see how you’re taking the traz. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I still take Traz everyday for it’s calming effect. Always at bedtime; occassionally during the day I’ll take a half tab. I occasionally still take Yohimbine. Right now I’m combining it with Viagra with very good results. Yes, I have read your other posts about that… maybe I should try doing that. Unfortunately viagra is not available here in Canada until November. My doctor told me that he could write me a prescription to buy it across the border (many are doing so already) but it’s really too much hassle, and expensive too! I think I will wait until November and see how it goes. Right now the little enhancement with yohimbine is already making my life much better! :-) Tom

I am wondering if anyone has had yohimbine + trazodone combination treatment before. If so, do you feel sleepy and find it hard to come? If so, will it go away with time?

Yes, I’ve used Y+T a lot. Now if only I had something black and white to tell you! It’s really good. Maybe. Years ago I started on Yohimbine and had great results with it. Not only did I have an increased libido but there were times it seemed like my penis had a spring in it. It would just pop up there and be really hard. Didn’t last too long but it was adequate. Then I read about trials with Trazadone and my co-operative doctor told me to give them a trial. Man, great sex! I called Yohimbine my "happy" pill because I was "happy" that I could now have intercourse pretty consistently. Trazodone became my "fun" pill because the erection would stay up so much longer. Great combination. But… I’ve tried to share my experience with this combination before with mixed success in sorting out distant memories. I think the bottom line is that of constant monkeying with the dosages and timing. Since all of my sex is during the day time I didn’t notice much trouble with Trazodone making me sleepy. After many years of using Traz (and Yoh sporadically) I *think* the operative principle is something like: "Traz WILL help prolong (maybe cause) an erection. As long as one keeps moving (mowing the lawn; playing baseball; really active sex) you won’t be very affected by its sleep inducing qualities. Once you lay down in bed though – you’re a goner." Yoh and Traz have produced some fantastic sex for me in the past. Good news and bad news. a. Yohimbine will likely speed up your pulse and blood pressure. Traz taken with the Yoh can help control the pulse/bp problem. b. The package insert with Yohimbine probably warns you not to mix it with any antidepressant. Like Trazodone. Take this with a grain of salt. Yohimbine is also a mood enhancer. If one is being treated medically for depression then adding Yohimbine can cause confusing results from a specific dose of an antidpressant and make it extra difficult for the treating physician to adjust to the proper dose of the antidepressant. But… c. I also once found a reference to the combination of the two drugs having a negative interaction with physical consequences. However, at the time I found this reference I had already been taking the combination for several years without that problem cropping up so, whatever it was, I dismissed it an went on. You might want to pursue it a little. I don’t remember it as being life threatening I still take Traz everyday for it’s calming effect. Always at bedtime; occassionally during the day I’ll take a half tab. I occasionally still take Yohimbine. Right now I’m combining it with Viagra with very good results. Good luck! Have fun!

I’ve been a lurker in this newsgroup for quite a while now and it’s about time to come out! I have a mild form of ED, which renders me unable to keep an erection hard enough for penetration about 1/2 of the time. I tried herbal yohimbe and it worked very well for me. After reading the postings in this ng for a while, I realised that I should not be shy about seeing a doctor. I went to see my family doctor and he prescribed me with yohimbine 5.4 mg three times a day. It worked very well for me, with fewer side effects than the herb (nausea, sweating, insomnia etc). Seemed that all side effects have disappeared. On the third follow-up, he gave me trazodone as well, saying that yohimbine was best combined with trazodone. I took 50 mg before I went to sleep and I was so sleepy! I took it for 3 days and found that I was almost impossible to ejaculate. I was able to get hard, possibly a bit harder although I was not sure, but it required so much ‘work’ to come. I continued to take trazodone for two days and nothing improved, and then I stopped it. I am wondering if anyone has had yohimbine + trazodone combination treatment before. If so, do you feel sleepy and find it hard to come? If so, will it go away with time? Thanks a lot for your advice! Tom
