Trying oral mask

Question:

Due to some sinus problems, the sleep doctor had me try an "Oracle Oral Mask."   Only tried 2 nights so far. Pros No head harness or chin strap needed. 90 percent silicone and hard to break anything. Easy to clean, and travel with. Throat feels much better. Cons, A bit harder to adjust to after 8 months of breathing through my nose. Must have heated humidifier. AS Thanks

Does this mean you stopped breathing through your nose all together? How do you stop that? A clothes pin LOL? Loretta

Actually Loretta, that’s what I thought.   When the pressure is applied via your mouth, you do not ventilate through your nose like when, the pressure is applied to your nose.  You don’t seem to get that blow by through your sinus.   You can breathe through your nose, but not both.  I don’t know if I am explaining myself here?    You just don’t have the CPAP applied orally and be able to breath through your nose or leak air through your nose as easily as a nasal mask. The only thing I did notice is that if the space between the bit part in your mouth is not adjusted correctly against the part at the outside lip seal, you will spit the damn thing out as soon as you fall asleep.   I found that out the first night. AS Thanks

the oracle is designed in such a way that it is supposed to actually block off the nasal airway… that’s why those who’ve had UPPP can’t use it You also can’t use it if you clench or grind your teeth — Beth in Australia =================== FAQ for alt.support.sleep-disorder can be found here http://www.anchorweb.com.au/sleepdisorders this site is a work in progress – feel free to submit info/articles

Do you wake up with rings around your mouth in the morning from the outside part of it? Margaret C.

Art, how are you coming along with the oral mask? I was also given an Oracle mouth piece. I’ve not yet gotten used to it and still revert to the mask. But the added bonus was now my insurance paid for me to get a heated humidifier, which they wouldn’t do with just the mask! -Tuvok On Sat, 11 Jan 2003 14:31:08 GMT, ART SANTELLA – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -<sante…@optonline.net> wrote: >Due to some sinus problems, the sleep doctor had me try an "Oracle Oral Mask."   Only >tried 2 nights so far. >Pros >No head harness or chin strap needed. >90 percent silicone and hard to break anything. >Easy to clean, and travel with. >Throat feels much better. >Cons, >A bit harder to adjust to after 8 months of breathing through my nose. >Must have heated humidifier. >AS >Thanks

No, if you adjust the distance between the inside and outside lip adjustments you should not have that problem.   It is a lot better than the marks I had all over my face from the normal nasal straps. AS Thanks

I have to be truthful Tuvok,  It is a heck of a lot harder to get used to than my nasal mask was.  You have to relearn to breath through your mouth and at the same time don’t bit down too hard, but don’t become slack jawed or the mouthpiece will leak or come out.   You sure do need the humidifier.  I go through twice as much water with the oral than I did with the nasal.  I am still not completely sure if I am going to use it 100%. AS Thanks
