Will my medication stop me from being able to go to flight school?

Question:

I have gotten a lot of good info reading this group. One thing concerning me before I get too excited about making flight school a serious option… I take Klonopin nightly before I go to sleep for a sleep disorder called Night Terrors.  Klonopin is classified as a benzodiazepine (like valium).  I have been taking the same dosage for over 8 years now nightly. I am in perfect health and strength train regularly.  I suffer no side effects from the medication having been on it so long.  Not that this matters to the FAA- but thought I’d mention it.   Will this be a problem? If you belong to AOPA, check their website on medication. If you don’t belong, you ought to consider it. At the very least, get a member to check for you.        all the best – Dan see Nothing New About Death at http://www.danford.net and the Annals of Military Aviation forum at http://www.delphi.com/annals

You might want to check here http://www.aviationmedicine.com/drugs.htm Also, I checked on the AOPA web page and they don’t list Klonopin on the "Approved list". If it isn’t an approved drug, you might want to consult your doctor to see if there is another approved medicine that you can use instead of Klonopin. I believe that any mood altering drug, such as this, requires deferal, so I suggest you get started early.  I suspect you will however, have a tough time with the FAA on this if you are still actively taking the drug. AOPA may be able to offer you strategies to get you through certification. (800 USA AOPA). -Ron
