Hoyt…… see the following link re dust mite control: dust mites live off mamalian skin cast offs. Human, dog, cat, etc. And you can’t stomp them to death. Rememer Spotless McPartin? Regards Lee in Toronto BTW, the no fibre pillow case covers that you can buy (expensive) for mite control can be made from inexpensive shower curtain liners of the same material. One liner makes three pillow cases. Add scissors, sewing machine and voila. Watch the damn sewing machine though, I was attacked by one when I was fourteen. —–= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =—– http://www.newsfeeds.com – The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! —–== Over 80,000 Newsgroups – 16 Different Servers! =—–

investigate heat air exchangers to ensure fresh air in house >Is there any info available on eliminating them or reducing their >effects?
Google search which provide thousands of hits (50,000 with string dust +mites+ health) example of commercial hit (about pillow cases no less) http://www.allergypillowcase.com/dust-mites-allergy-asthma-home-aller… lowcase-bedroom-pillow.cfm environmental style http://www.pioneerthinking.com/mites.html > Relevant to this perhaps is that the apnea problem only began to be > really obvious when heating season came along, when we began keeping the > house tightened up for ease of retaining heat … and cleaning the air in > the main section of house definitely improved my situation.
Be careful – symptoms can be reduced or eliminated – does not mean the malady goes away. There are internal things happening as well as those that manifest themselves in obvious ways (fatigue). > use plastic matress and pillow coveres under the sheets and fabic pillow > cases, inprove air cleanliness throughout the house, wash more > frequently and properly store all bedding, and try to find >commercial
products to reduce the mite load. Lots of info available, check your local health store. Most DME’s also carry various lines of products – do some serious price checking. The same product in a linen store may be a third the price you pay in a "speciality" shop. > to also review your situations too.
Been done – one element of a healthy & balanced life style is keeping the air clean. By the way, like most things that can cause us triouble dust mites are also very good for us (people in general). They contribute to keeping us healthy. Like all things good for us, too much is a bad thing and for the unfortunate few "too much" doesn’t take much.

Again, my thanx to the people who have had suggestions: Lee, Anna and Norm being foremost among them. I decided to test one more hypothesis last night … I find I doze off more than occasionally while watching the news, and sometimes when I do I lie down on the bed we keep next to TV in upstairs room where my wife sleeps sometimes when I’m tossing. I noticed that within a few breaths I was starting to feel congested in nose and shortly as I dozed off, I was staring to show signs of obstructive apnea. I thought about what one of our pals had said about her bubby, who is ‘allergic to everything’ and is on CPAP. I’ve never been allergic to anything, but dust mites came to mind this time. As soon as I went back downstairs into the rooms where our air cleaner/circulator was operating, I felt the nasal obstruction go away completely. Now, I’ve been sleeping on sofa because I get the same symptoms when I use our bed, which is in another room yet. I’ve also noticed that I do sleep better when in clear air, but that is still in close proximity to upholstered furniture and pillows, and I’m still quite senitive to sleeping position. So I went to the basement with its concrete floor and I piled up a batch of sleeping bags which have been used only for camping and which have been packed after washing out. I got a fresh pillowcase and a pillow that was in basement for a long time, and I laid down under another bag. All this is in proximity to the basement door, which admits a stream of fresh air thru the weatherstripping, which does need replacing. That seems to have been a lot better and I fell asleep w/o difficulty. Within three hours I’d woken only once, in response to the usual feeling of slight obstruction; I went upstairs and got another pillow, the one I used for propping upper body while sleeping on sofa and set it up for body prop by placing it between two layers of the lower bedding. I was able to fall asleep again promptly. As night progressed, however I noticed my nose closing up again and I begain feeling choked. So I ditched the bigger pillow and instead re-laid the bedding to assist my sleep position. That seems to have done it. By time morning came, I was still clear in the nose, had gone for five more hours in fairly restful sleep, had dreamed some but recalled them less vividly, and am now pretty well refreshed to boot. And by morning, I had also been able to reduce the inclination of upper body and lie almost perfectly recumbebt again. So I want to run this by you all, esp my faithful correspondants. Any sources on dust mite allergies in re apnea? I am aware that these are now known to be sources of other allergies in many folks. Is one of the reasons CPAP is so effective, that the air is filtered? Have any of you any known allergies to the mites or their by-products? Is there any info available on eliminating them or reducing their effects? Relevant to this perhaps is that the apnea problem only began to be really obvious when heating season came along, when we began keeping the house tightened up for ease of retaining heat … and cleaning the air in the main section of house definitely improved my situation. I’ve decided we’re going to take a long look at this, with first plans to use plastic matress and pillow coveres under the sheets and fabic pillow cases, inprove air cleanliness throughout the house, wash more frequently and properly store all bedding, and try to find commercial products to reduce the mite load. For info, what I already know about these mites is they eat dead skin flakes and breed in any cloth or similar porus materials, and can in fact be found on most human’s faces, in the area of lashes and hair follicles. I think this is important enough a prospect that you sufferers might want to also review your situations too. As usual, all feedback welcome! Thanks and HAGO.
