BEST MASK and HEADGEAR???

Question:

What is the best nasal mask?  I thought I read that one was really popular with folks on this group? Is it in a FAQ? Thanks

there are some user recommendations at www.anchorweb.com.au/sleepdisorders/masks.htm — Beth in Australia =================== FAQ for alt.support.sleep-disorder can be found here http://www.anchorweb.com.au/sleepdisorders this site is a work in progress – feel free to submit info/articles

IMHO, there is rarely one "best" of anything. — Visit Charlie’s Sneaker Pages: http://sneakers.pair.com/

Masks are a highly individual choice. I think nasal pillows, especially with the Breeze or CONJO custom headgear, are the only way to go, but we’ve had people here who hated pillows. OTOH, I simply couldn’t draw a breath while using the Mirage mask, and it’s one of the most popular masks in the group. >Is it in a FAQ?

Beth posted the link, I’d add the IQ mask as another one that we’ve heard good things about. Have you been through titration yet?  That’s the only time most of us get to try a selection of masks, I’d take advantage of it. Tom

Yes, I’ve been on CPAP for about 5 weeks now.  They initially gave me a Respironics Comfort Classic mask (small), but after two weeks of fighting it (air leaks and severe pressure sores on my nose and forehead), I asked my DME for an ADAMs circuit with pillows. The ADAMs circuit worked much better, but the crappy headgear had velcro right behind my ears, and they were getting torn up by the velcro.  Also, the crappy headgear kept coming off all the time.  About two weeks ago, I got the CONJO headgear and the short hose and swivel, and this has improved things considerably. I like the CONJO, but I am thinking that I might also like to try a different mask again– the CONJO headgear is still problematic for me (doesn’t want to stay in place, too tight / too loose, etc.)  I was thinking that I might try another mask when my 6-month of HMO control is up. Any thoughts? BTW:  This morning I went back to bed for another hour of sleep, since I have been battling a sinus infection / cold this week and feel generally run down.  I drifted back to sleep without CPAP, and I counted three times the first half hour that I "snorted" enough to wake myself up.  After I plopped the CPAP on, my three cats and I got another two hours of sleep– just like a log! CPAP is making a difference in my life– but I still am not firing 100% energy.  Of course, this cold is getting me down right now, but I got a Z-pack and some Nyquil, along with some Vitamin C and Zinc to kick its infectious ass.    :-) Thanks all!

Just try to find a DME that will let you try different masks. I think I’d avoid nasal pillows, your only other headgear choice is the Breeze, and most people rate it and the CONJO headgear about even. >BTW:  This morning I went back to bed for another hour of sleep, since I >have been battling a sinus infection / cold this week and feel generally run >down.

Do you have a heated humidifier?  If so, try turning it up. The weather’s getting cooler, so the air can’t hold as much water. >  I drifted back to sleep without CPAP, and I counted three times the >first half hour that I "snorted" enough to wake myself up.  After I plopped >the CPAP on, my three cats and I got another two hours of sleep– just like >a log!

You’re learning.<g>  CPAP has to be used for 100% of all sleep time to be effective. >CPAP is making a difference in my life– but I still am not firing 100% >energy.  Of course, this cold is getting me down right now, but I got a >Z-pack and some Nyquil, along with some Vitamin C and Zinc to kick its >infectious ass.    :-)

It takes some people longer than others, you may have to be patient. But call your sleep doctor if you don’t feel you’re progressing as fast as you should, they’ll often approve a slight pressure boost without requiring a retest. Few of us sleep as deeply during titration as we do at home, and deep sleep is where apneas are most likely. Tom

I have been on CPAP for a little over 2 months now, and although I feel much better and get much more accomplished, I am not near what I know I will eventually be in the energy department. We have allot of sleep debt to make up, and it could take awhile. Hope your cold is getting better!! Cindy

Cindy: You’re certainly correct about sleep debt. I have years of it to make up. I didn’t set the alarm last night and woke up this a.m. to find out I had slept 12 hours!! My jewel of a wife decided since I was sleeping so soundly she’d just let me sleep in. It is such a pleasure to go to bed now knowing that I’m going to get a decent night’s sleep. Hal

Make sure you give her a big bear hug, or some roses, or a new peice of jewlery (silly giggle) for being so supportive, that is not always the case with some people. I hear ya on the pleasure of sleeping, I hated to go to sleep before CPAP, now I really look forward to it. Cindy
