Cats as alarm clocks?

Question:

My mom raised this question about Luigi and Luciano, and I wondered if anybody else had a similar story with their cats… It seems that every morning, Monday through Friday, Luciano will go "pat" my mom awake at 6:30, which is what time she needs to get up for work.   On Saturdays, he lets her sleep until 7:30, and Sundays he wakes her up at 7:00, which is when she needs to get up in time for church. Luigi wakes my sister up at nine Monday through Friday (so she can get ready for class on time) and leaves her alone on the weekends. I should mention that when they belonged to me, I worked a very odd schedule (nights for two weeks then days for two weeks) and they always seemed to know when to wake me up too. So just how good is a cat’s sense of time?  Are they all like this?   Chase (my new cat) just wakes me up whenever he wants to…. Shannon

When I was on a regular schedule, I fed the cats when I got up, so they always woke me up at the exact same time.  Now that I rarely have to get up at a specific time, Dora still will wake me if I try to sleep past 9:30.  She gets very insistent. I get up, take a shower and the lays in my place on the bed and sleeps.  I think she has the idea that the bed is only mine until 9:30 and then I’m encroaching on her nap time! Marguerite

Response:

I’m really surprised to read all these responses.  I actually though I was the only one with an ‘alarm clock’ kitty. I have a sleep disorder.  Every morning my best friend calls to wake me up. Sometimes I remember the call and sometimes I don’t.  But, lo and behold, when my alarm clock goes off a while after the call, my Patches, a long hair calico, is right on my face.  She pulls my hair with her teeth, nibbles on my cheek, screams in my face, hits me on the nose with her paw, and today, she stuck her paw in my mouth.  As soon as I get up and turn the alarm clock off, the attacks cease. I certainly don’t know how I would survive without her right now.  I actually imagine that the alarm clock bothers her, and that’s why she does it.  But I want to think that she is my gift from God. :When I was on a regular schedule, I fed the cats when I got up, so they :always woke me up at the exact same time… when i tried this, lennie woke me up a few minutes earlier every day, until i was getting up at 4:30 to feed him. now i feed him before i go to bed. lennie seems to not account for any kind of weekly schedule. of course the fact that i have nothing at all resembling one doesn’t help. — rob

Kami is also a very good alarm clock.  She has saved me from being late for work on several occasions.  She is not quite as good at differentiating work days from days off however. mary

You got lucky, my little "angel" wakes me up at 4:30 a.m., then furiously at 6:30 a.m. and he’s well aware that I don’t actually get up until 7:30 a.m.  His sense of time is sharp because it’s always the same times every morning, he’s just operating on some other time zones! Erica
