depression & fatigue
Question:
I originally took Amantadine for fatigue with no effect at all. I was also slightly depressed, kinda moping around. I started on Cylert a couple of months ago with a very dramatic effect on my fatigue and an end to the depression. I never have insomnia, although I probably take a lower dose than most (37.5/mg. per day). Ralph

Yes, it can. Fatigue is one of the hallmarks of depression as are changing in sleeping patterns. Give the antidepressants a couple more weeks to begin to make a change. Amantadine is often prescribed for MS fatigue and is effective in a certain percentage of cases. Others take cylert. I’d get the depression under control first and see how you feel. True, Cylert can cause insomnia. The first month on it was hell. I was very careful, took a very low dose (lower than prescribed) and once I adjusted to it, the insomnia did go away. Have noted more energy, better mood, and not as depressed (probably because I am sleeping better now, after a long bout of severe sleep disorders that I believe are part of the disease, rather than depression). I have had a waxing/waning sleep disorder for years (like 20 or more now) and I think that Cylert has really helped. I tried an assortment of antidepressants, found them to be zombie drugs. I care for no more myself. Need all the "real" brain I got left". I tried amantadine, it had no effect. commonly prescribed for fatigue. But Cyalert can cause insomnia problems. Oh, also, lots and lots of coffee!

Joan, yes, depression can cause horrible fatigue, and horrible fatigue can also cause you to be depressed. And both are things that can happen with having MS…so there’s lots of opportunities for you to experience both! And there are meds for both: Amantadine is often prescribed for fatigue, and works well for some people; and there are drugs for depression. I don’t take either, so can’t help, but others here do, and I’m sure will… Ann

Hi, I have had both for several years–MS related. I take amantadine for fatigue and it helps some. MS fatigue can also be treated with a stimulant called Cylert (pemoline-generic name). I have been on several different antidepressants at different times—current one is Effexor. You need to find something that works for you. Hope your doctor will help you. If he/she doesn’t, find another doc. Take care. Joan Depression can cause fatigue. Two of the sure signs when mixed with others are disrupted sleep patterns with insomnia and the need to sleep all the time. Your antidepressant should kick in soon. Most take 7 to 21 days to start working. If you don’t start seeing a difference in your mood in the next few days, call your doc. Are you seeing a shrink? They should be the ones to monitor your antidepressants. I could talk to you about the drugs for fatigue but it’s usually best to not start them while an antidepressant is being evaluated for effectiveness. L
