Diet by William Beaumont Hospital. Uses the HMR-800 food supplement.  I have five milkshakes a day (each made with one of these). I add in 2 teaspoons of safflower oil to the first shake of the morning to help make sure I get enough linoleic acid (helps prevent gall bladder problems). I add in two ounces of Millers Bran per day, which is a lot.  I tolerate it well, and it is to have some bulk with which to have bowel movements. I am to exercise at least 5-7 days a week, with a minimum goal of burning 2,000 calories in the process. I am to go to their behavior modification classes, and I see a medical doctor weekly to make sure that things are humming along smoothly. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Gary Rimar wrote: > > I’ve been on the hospital diet for almost three weeks now.  Here are some of > > the high points: > > ** Have dropped about  24 pounds (out of 80-90 needed to lose).  The doc > > figures that I will probably lose about five pounds a week. > > ** Can walk at least six miles a day (new job helps).  Am to do something > > 5-7 days a week cardio, and weights at least two days a week if I can make > > the time. > > ** Have had too significant a reduction in blood pressure (was borderline > > high when I started).  Last check was 96/64.  The doctor added two cubes of > > bouillon to the food plan (for the salt).  This has helped with a bit of the > > head loopiness (not all loopiness related to blood pressure or diet ;-) . > > ** Still think the taste of the shakes is fine. > > ** Have found an advantage during a very stressful period at work (at new > > job) in being able to eat in 5 minutes and have all the proper nutrients > > with none of the body-burdening crapola. > > ** Since I’m to eat every three hours, have found www.iping.com.  This web > > site will ring my cell phone five times a day at three-hour intervals and > > remind me to eat.  Since the first incoming minute on my cell phone is free, > > and so is the service, it is a cheap way to get the reminder.  Yes, > > sometimes I need a reminder that it is time to eat. > > ** Have been told that if I need to I can add in up to four cups a day of > > low-starch veggies (adds about 100 calories).  Have also been told that I > > can add as much Miller’s Bran as I want, because it is such a complex > > carbohydrate that it won’t cause me a problem.  It also makes good bulk for > > the bathroom.  Because I have added more Miller’s Bran, I am not having any > > problems with having something to do during bowel movements. > > ** Survived "Halloweem," which is Chicago Mensa’s regional gathering. > > Billed as the world’s longest Halloween party, like any Mensa regional > > gathering, it is a food orgy.  There is plenty of food in the 24-hour > > hospitality suites.  I stuck with my shakes and with diet pop (I’m allowed > > three a day max). > > ** Other people are starting to notice my face isn’t as fat, my stomach > > doesn’t stick out as far, and I’m starting to find my chin again. > > ** Women at work are hitting on me (and not using a baseball bat to do it, > > even though I work with the computers ;-) . > > **  I do get tired now and again, but when you consider the schedule I’m > > keeping, this is to be expected. > > **  I do sometimes find myself hungry.  They have told me I can add in a > > sixth shake if I feel I need the boost, but I’m rebelling against it, as I’d > > rather follow what works.  Besides, unless I double up on the shakes (which > > we are allowed to do), I’d be having my first meal at 7 in the morning and > > my last meal at 10 at night, eating every three hours.  That’s a LOT of > > eating (even if it only takes five minutes to whip up a shake). > > ** I do sometimes find myself FULL, especially when you consider that I have > > to drink 64 ounces of water in addition to the shakes (which at 6 ounces > > each is almost another quart). > > ** When I get close to my personal perception of my optimal weight, they > > will put me in a device called a Dexascan (sp?).  What this does is > > calculate in grams the amount of bone, lean, and fat mass I have.  They will > > then tell me how much more weight (if any) I have to lose (or gain!). > >         Gary (in other words, so far so good) Rimar

Norm, go to the following web site if possible. http://www.deja.com/group/alt.support.sleep-disorder It is a site that archives a lot of different usenet groups including this one. At this site is a search function which you can use to look up lots of past posts (anything from May 1999 is archived, IIRC)  by using Key words or Posters e-mail address. One quick Note, the word Diet, by itself  with no author information will get you many many many posts, to wade through. You can also look up other information that you find interesting there too. > —
