misdiagnosing sleep problems

Question:

here is my stiuation. I have had problem falling asleep. And now, I have trouble going back to sleep if I get up or am awakened. It is driving me nuts! I set up an appointment with a psychologist, and it seems he wants to "dig" to find some evidence of a disorder (possibly bi-polar), I just have a recent problem with falling asleep, and yes that bothered me and really bummed me out because it worried me.I really don’t think I have a mental disorder.  those of you with similar problems? and any advise? thanks, rob

Response:

I would suggest a blood test to check thyroid (TSH, T3, T4) , B12 and folate.  Low levels can cause sleep problems.  A short acting hypnotic like Ambien or Sonata is not a good option in your case since you can’t maintain sleep. — JP ROBKABOB 1 <robkab…@aol.com> wrote in message

I have insomnia since a while (well, 30 years or so :) ). My GP was talking of a possible ‘monosymptomatic depression’ (as if you would say somebody has a monosymptomatic flu if he feels tired). The first psychiatrist I went to about it, said I had a mild anxiety-disorder, and as that is the same as depression, he treated me for depression. From then on I was cured of the notion, that any Doc would do. I started to ask them on the phone, what their notion about sleep-disorders is. One told me, under *every* sleep-disorder there is a mental disorder, as well. Needless to say I said tx for your time, and goodbye. Luckily, I found somebody, who knows a bit more about sleep-disorders. We discussed the possibility of depression and anxiety, and we came to the conclusion, that I do not have neither. So, in a nutshell, my advise would be, find yourself somebody else. We call those Docs ’symptom-hunters’ who want to see a severe mental illness in everybody.
