Hi Bob I did mine at the Repatriation Hospital at Daw Park My doctor their is Dr S Morton – she is really great. My old family doctor recommended I have the test done 5 years ago but I moved away and forgot about it. I asked to be tested in November and had the test in December and got the machine 2 days ago –  so its a relief to FINALLY know why I feel so crappy all the time! I’ve just been diagnosed as well, and I’ve got to go back in to the hospital down here in Tassie for another test for the CPAP machine, and I was just wondering, how you, and other’s have got the machines, i.e. purchasing, hiring or what, and how difficult it is to get used to using the machine, and other tips, for when I get a CPAP machine. — Bye for now,                      Paul "Belinda" <belind…@dodo.com.au> wrote in message

Paul, You should get some info at the time your doc gives you a script for a machine.  You should be given at the minimum a list of places where you can make a purchase from. Most places will allow short term rental or purchase options. The hints that you need are: keep an eye here and ask questions as they come up – someone will answer. try on several masks/interfaces until you find the one that is comfortable for YOU make sure you get to try them on AT YOUR PRESCRIBED PRESSURE. do plenty of reading and find out how to adjust the mask (remember loose is better in ALL cases) Some people "get used" to wearing a hose to be almost immediately (like me) and others take several months to adjust. I always say that it is 90% attitude, so start off with a positive attitude that it is going to help you and you will get there will less effort than someone who fights it. Once you get your script, let us know and ask some more questions as necessary. Bob in (South) Aus "Paul" <p…@hotmail.com> wrote in message

Hi Paul, always good to welcome another aussie (at least i’m assuming you mean Tassie as in Australia!) You’d have to ask your doc/clinic about what suppliers are around in your area. You can hire them but if you can afford to purchase outright it ends up being a lot cheaper. There’s some govt. assistance available for people on benefits but there’s likely a waiting list. Some find it really easy to get used to using a CPAP (like me) but for others it’s more difficult…… YOU have the advantage of having come here where you’ll find lots of advice you might not have heard otherwise. You can check out this hints page for some info you’ll find useful. http://talhost.net/sleep/cpap.htm Good luck, and keep us updated — Beth in Australia (I am not a medical professional and anything stated in my posts is my opinion only unless specified otherwise) =================== FAQ for alt.support.sleep-disorder can be found here http://talhost.net/sleep Newsgroup Archives http://talhost.net/sleep/archives.htm this site is a work in progress – feel free to submit info/articles

Hi Belinda, Stick with it and ask questions when you need to. Good to see another South Aussie here. You will find you will go thru a period of adjustment, but I can assure you it is worth it! Bob in South Aus "Belinda" <belind…@dodo.com.au> wrote in message

the tighness in the chest, could it be muslce soreness?  It’s not uncommon for people to have an uncomfortable feelign as their lungs adjust to breathing in more deeply than they’re sometimes used to. The swollen tongue feeling – hmm…….could be from your mouth drying out the night before – are you using a heated humidifier?  if not, chances are you need one, seems the majority do but docs have yet to catch up with this fact and prescribe them routinely! If you ARE using a heated humidifier, make sure you only use distilled water, in some places, the quality of the water and chemical content means it’s something we probably shouldn’t breathe in all night. – distilled water is also better for your machine When you’re concerned about your health, you should always consult your doc – a simply phonecall isn’t genearlly too hard to make, although I’m guessing by now you’ll  be waiting till morning to do that! Hi I have just been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea and have had my first night with a CPAP machine. I am delaying going to bed as the nurse who instructed me on how to use the machine said I should notify them immediately if I woke having trouble breathing in the morning. Well.. all day I have been feeling tight in the chest and at times a little breathless – just a little not heaps. So, do I go on the machine tonight or contact them?? This might sound strange but my tongue also feels a bit swollen like I am biting the sides of it a bit. I used to have asthma but have not had any symptoms in the last year. Is this all a coincidence or should I be concerned – any help appreciated!!! Thanks, Belinda South Australia.

That *can* simply be as a result of breathing against a higher than normal air pressure – in effect giving your lungs some exercise. >So, do I go on the machine tonight or >contact them?? This might sound strange but my tongue also feels a bit >swollen like I am biting the sides of it a bit.

Is there some dryness as well?   >I used to have asthma but >have not had any symptoms in the last year.

Given all of that, I think I would play safe and call them. >Is this all a coincidence or should I be concerned – any help appreciated!!! >Thanks, Belinda >South Australia.
