This is perfectly easy, but you need a Mac.  :-)

Gregh, Here’s a good start file list – http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm profman.dos isn’t in there nor showed anything with a google or Microsoft search. — Bob Gootee When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on. news.newusers.questions Moderation Team Worker news:news.newusers.questions

i know it’s a completely different thing, i just thought that might have been sitting in your memory as "folders first"…… other than by sort order by name – where the folders are at the top automatically, i can’t think of any other way to make the filders go first — Beth in Australia =================== FAQ for alt.support.sleep-disorder can be found here http://www.anchorweb.com.au/sleepdisorders this site is a work in progress – feel free to submit info/articles .

To the best of my knowledge, in any defrag it refers to where you want your folders on the hard drive for improved access. I’m talking about when you display a directory, where folders show up.

In fact, if your machine can handle it, you may go XP. It has some useful features in it that can shortcut these problems. The thing I do above and beyond all that is 2 HDs, one for the work and the other for image backups. — Friar Tuck was always the butt of Spoonerism Jokes from the Merry Men!

have you run msconfig to check out what is running in startup that may be causing that? Run each exe individually to see if it causes that same error then take the tick off the offender. I like SFC in XP better. SFC /SCANONCE and forget about it. ;-} > years in the computer business, who teaches the subjects at college and > owns a retail computer repair facility.

Bloody hell you guys like to go on! OK then, give me a reason why XP Pro and XP Home dont immediately ALWAYS get on if working first then introduced to each other on a lan (2 different computers). I was playing about with this the other day and had built a spare computer to do this sort of thing with from spare parts I had laying about. Anyway, it was a P2 400 with 128Megs ram which is adequate for this sort of test. I installed a LAN card in it and put XP on. XP knew the lan card was there and the minute I plugged the network cable in, it KNEW about my ADSL connection to the net and used it! So, I got all uppity with it and manually configured TCP/IP as each computer was not known to the other one though they could read the other’s disks. SuddenlyWHAM all was there. However, on a customer’s computer nothing is working. I have come to the conclusion that either her laptop or desktop NICs – or both – are broken as I was getting intermittent contact. May be her cable. So, I haev a NIC for the dkestop and a crossover wired Cat5. Hoping to prove the point when I go back there. If it IS the broken card, then HEHEHEHE I have proven something that her "IT Specialist" who installs large LAN installations couldnt. Hope I am right. I searched the web and couldnt find this mentioned as a problem relating to XP pro or home. So, if you have any thoughts on the matter, be glad to hear them. Also have to say I am pleased with how easy it usually is with XP to get networking going. > BTW, if you must re-install, do you know the undocumented install > switches that may make for better sucess?

I never bother stuffing about. I install windows on top of windows. I found with XP this actually has to be done every 3 months if you use the computer heavily. — Friar Tuck was always the butt of Spoonerism Jokes from the Merry Men!

In FOLDER OPTIONS (depends which WIN you are using as to where that is) there is an option to remember each folder’s view so you can have one in large icons and another in detail view for example, if you wish. I think you’re describing the exact same problem I had (i’ve also been usin puters since i was only a little tacker in the 70s – my dad has been using them for much longer)  No matter how often you changed the way the folders are sorted, every time you open the OPEN menu through a program, the files would always be listed z-a instead of a-z with all the folders at the end……. i couldn’t figure out what the problem was…and as i was also having mouse probs (turned out to be the mouse LOL) I gave in and decided it was time my system was cleaned out anyhow…..formatted, fixed the problem tho!  would love to know what caused it…..just figured it was one of those freaky things that happens once in a while…..but now that i know it’s happend to someone else….it doesn’t seem so freaky……i’ve been using win98 for years though, never had that happen before, or, until now, heard of it happening to anyone else. If you figure out what caused it……or how to fix it – I’d be intersted in knowing — Beth in Australia =================== FAQ for alt.support.sleep-disorder can be found here http://www.anchorweb.com.au/sleepdisorders this site is a work in progress – feel free to submit info/articles

Found one possibly corrupted file, "nsuninst.exe".  I don’t think that’s causing my problem(s).  Since there is another identical copy of it on my machine, I clicked "Ignore". As to "Protman.dos", this was the first time I ever tried to use SFC to ‘replace’ a file.  SFC asked where I wanted the new file to be written.  Darned if I know. Since it already exists on my computer (I found it with a search) and SFC doesn’t show it possibly corrupted, it must be a registry problem.  Anyone know how to hack the registry to tell it where to find the file?

Didn’t even think about it, eeven though I have a note to use SFC to try to pick up a file named protman.dos.  Lately, when I boot up I get a message on the DOS screen that WindowsNet Startprofman.dos does not exist or is not where the registry is.  The details are available by excuting "Net Help 7308" from a DOS window. I can’t find any "Net Start" on my machine.  Protman.dos does exist in Windows folder and I found no reference to it in the registry. > Mind you, this is from a person with only 37 > years in the computer business, who teaches the subjects at college and > owns a retail computer repair facility.

Thanks, but no go.  Based on my 40 years of computing, 20 years with PC clones and Microsoft operating systems <g>, I have concluded that something has become corrupted. Since it is so easy to reinstall my 98SE, Im going to do it.  Can’t deal with things that are not in ascending order (with files first). Reminds me.  I thought there was an option to have your folders either first or last. Anyone? Thanks again.

Response:

I’ve always used the Folder Detail View, in ascending alphabetical order, folders first and then files. I don’t know what I did, but now they are showing in descending alphabetical order, files first and then folders.  With my congition problems, it’s driving me crazy. Haven’t been able to find where/how to change them back. To add insult to injury, while trying to figure this out, I managed to select the webstyle window that puts the useless grapic and file info on 25% of the left side of the window.  I can’t remember where I did that. Help, please. TIA

Norm this happens when you reverse the sort order,I’ve have it happen with date or name and I just tried and it works with any on the columns.  This occurs because you accidentally clicked on one the column headings, that is how you change the order from accenting to descending by clicking on the heading. Unless I’m going wacky, there is a permanent setting for how you want files and folders to be displayed.  It gets pretty tiring to have to click the column every time I open a particular folder.  And that’s what’s happening.

My computer, hi-light drive C, View, Folder Options, View, and UN check Remember each folder settings. Then click on ‘Like current folder’. All will be the same and will be remembered.
