Please, more info on Doug

Question:

Hi all, this news is so devastating to me. I really believed he just got off this ng cause of all the bickering.  I feel so awful.  I am anxious to hear what happened…I just can’t believe it. I feel as tho a good friend has died, and I can’t get any information on how of why.  That’s frustrating to me, but like you said; we must just wait.  I know that he had a teenage daughter who he wrote about from time to time, and referred to her adoringly. I think he mentioned that she lived in Michigan. I am so sad.  Deb

Hi all, I am very upset, to say the least, to read that Doug died. I considered him part of our ng family.  He had his own opinions, but nevertheless, did seem to care about us, except when we attacked him for his narrowmindedness.  OMG, I am so upset, if it is so, that he died. Please, anyone with more info, please advise us all in a posting. If he did in fact pass away, what happened?  Please don’t, anyone, make this into a big deal here; I just want to know the facts, if anyone has them. Thanks alot, Deb

Deb (and everyone), As you know, several weeks ago I posted emails to every email address I could find for Doug Ruth including the ones he used for posting on this newsgroup.  In the end I had several negative replies, but I did receive a reply from one address saying that Doug had died in October.  The message was signed "Doug’s Mom" and explained that his mother was using his computer.  Apparently the cause of Doug’s death had nothing to do with his sleep disorder. I was extremely upset to hear this sad news and even now have the greatest difficulty accepting it.  I replied expressing the deepest sympathy, not only for myself, but on behalf of the many people on this newsgroup who respected Doug (whether we agreed with him or not).  I also asked whether, when the time was right, Doug’s Mom could say something about how he had died.   I did not expect an early reply and have not had one so far.  Like Bill in Michigan, I was very hesitant about posting anything on here until I had more details.  I suggest we wait, and no doubt in the fullness of time, all will be revealed.  In the meantime we should respect his family’s privacy. Perhaps the greatest tribute I can pay Doug is that I recognised the sheer breadth and depth of his intellect and his great persistence and tenacity in researching sleep apnea on the Internet.  Whether or not I agreed with his interpretations, Doug did me (and the newsgroup) a very great service by presenting a considerable amount of highly relevant research.   Since Doug left the newsgroup I have had to do my own research.  This has taken a great deal of time and effort.  Yet it has yielded only a fraction of the value of Doug’s postings to the newsgroup over a comparable period, showing the amount of time and sheer effort he must have expended. Doug had the courage to question what most people thought unquestionable.  His legacy to the newsgroup is that we are a far better informed group of apneics. Thanks to Doug we are no longer afraid to challenge the tenets, claims and downright mistruths of those involved in that fast-growing and highly lucrative multi-million dollar business known to us all as "Sleep Disorders".  He will not be forgotten. — Tony Polson, North Yorkshire, UK to reply change nospam to scalby
