Question for the experienced:
Question:
I now have 30 days on CPAP. I was just curious as to what happens if, while asleep, there is a power failure. Will the machine stopping create enough discomfort to awaken one immediately?
Response:
you will wake up when you don’t get the higher flow of air…. maybe not immediately, but you’ll wake up but you will still be able to breath with the mask on. had a power outage last night…….. dang it……. went for an hour without CPAP until the power came back on……… ahh….. the refreshing breeze from the CPAP blower…… i rely on it now "Ray W" <rwatt…@swbell.net> wrote in message

Your brain will go into a degraded CPAP backup mode and your mouth will automagically open. — Visit Charlie’s Sneaker Pages: http://sneakers.pair.com/

Good point. Probably the kind that uses a buzzer and a bright light would be really good. Paul R

I’ve woken up before the machine finished winding down. <smile> Tony

You will find lots of people here who will say that you will wake up. And that is true for most people. However, if you heart severe heart problems, like CHF, you need to be wakened. Just a couple of minutes of re-breathing carbon dioxide can trigger a fatal heart attack. I have mine on an alarm system that will wake me if power goes off. Probably the cheapest kind of alarm is one that is sold to indicate power loss for a freezer. You’ll wake up. (No one’s reported dieing yet – stay tuned). Seriously, any significant change wakes most people, whether the change is the blower, or room temperature (heater/AC failure), loud noises, lack of loud noises etc. Don’t worry about it. I was dreaming i was standing outside a place i volunteer…. the road had ice and snow on it (it doesn’t snow here LOL) and a car was racing round the corner going very fast, slipping on the ice and nearly hit me but i managed to get out of the way… i started walking along the street and found i couldn’t breathe…. i didn’t know why and was tugging at my colar trying to get myself to breathe….then i woke up and thought i couldn’t breathe – but i could actually breathe, ti’s just that the power had gone off and my body was shocked by the sudden drop in air pressure… — Beth in Australia =================== FAQ for alt.support.sleep-disorder can be found here http://www.anchorweb.com.au/sleepdisorders this site is a work in progress – feel free to submit info/articles – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

When the power failedon me I choked for about an hour orso before I woke up. If the power goes off, most of the time it happens in the winter here in N.E. Texas, i usually have to slee in my recliner. I don’t choke in it. ============================== Harold Type 2 Insulin Dependant Diabetic Diagnosed 03/1991 Spinal injury Patient Injured 03/22/2000
