Can anyone reccomend a good sleep expert in the Richmond, VA area? I have a very, very severe (avg. 2 light hours of sleep a night, when I need 8 to feel rested – 14 years duration, I am 41 and have been to many sleep labs, been on many meds and stopped them all when they did nothing for me, read a lot ,etc, etc — it feels like I’m out of luck really). My problen started during a somewhat stressful time (so what, who doesn’t have stress!) but has dogedly persisted and the past 14 years have been torture! It is entirely of the "psychophysiologic" type (which means very little even to the "experts" (ie: it is not caused by obstruction, restless legs, etc. It is what seems to be an irreversible biochemical or neurophysiologic change(neurotransmitters in the brain or brainstem)). This seems intuitively obvious after the last 14 years of time to observe and think and study the problem. I feel strongly that there should be a web site or group just for this type of problem, because as I am reading some of the input here, I can see that there are others with this very unique type of insomnia and we are all suffering to a degree that is almost incomprehensible. We know we do not have OBS, we have a specific but hugely misunderstood and unexplainable disease that I feel is almost totally unknown even to MD’s and to many sleep specialists at that! Sorry for rambling. Thanks for any responses.

There is a new sleep medication called Sonata (Zaleplon). http://www.ahp.com/releases/ahp_091599.htm I sometimes take the following to help me fall asleep. The idea being to reduce cortisol levels. Acetyl-L-Carnithine Phosphatidyl Serine SERIPHOS (do a search at http://www.vitaminshoppe.com) Melatonin DHEA http://www.mpipsykl.mpg.de/html/steiger.htm http://altmed.od.nih.gov/nccam/cam/1998/spring/3.htm http://www.smartbasic.com/cat.aminos/alc.cat.html http://www.nutritionsciencenews.com/NSN_backs/Sep_98/sports.html
