20 Ritalins a day ??????

Question:

Excuse my last post, I was logged off accidentally.    When I used to take ritalin, I was taking doses in the range of 10 to 80+ mg a day. Many of my ADHD friends also were taking similiar doses. As to the issue of long term studies on ritalin, one Doc told me that he had patients who had been on ritalin in excess of 50 yrs.                                    -Dan

Actually I developed heart palpitations and blurry eyesight while I was on Ritaln.  I have since stopped but you can guess what has happened to my attention span!!

A friend’s friend recently commited suicide. Near the end, he was taking (amongst others) 20 x 10mg Ritalin per day — at the psychiatrist’s prescription. Now I’m wondering: How much is 200mg of Ritalin? How does it compare to a fix of speed? Anybody ever experienced taking that much? I’m used to taking at most 30mg (for ADD) only at peak times during the month.         ,_         /_)              /| /        /   i e t e r    / |/ a g e l        The Platinum Puma

I know someone who was diagnosed with the sleep paralysis form of narcolepsy several years ago and takes Ritalin for the condition.  He takes two time release (sustained release) of about 100 mG strength per day, one upon awakening, and one at lunch time.  He developed a tolerance early on in this therapy for the stimulant effects and overall is not particularly hyper.  He does have significant side effects from this level of Ritalin but they are tolerable to him, especially compared to the terrifying effects of sleep paralysis.  He has been on this regimen for several years now.  He has had brain wave studies done and without medication, he shows abnormalities which disappear with medication and revert to normal brain wave patterns. His is a very unusual case, but it is an example of long term, relatively high dosage use, for those who are interested in the info.         Dennis

I used to take 80mg ritalin every day for ADD.  The ‘proper’ dose can vary quite considerably, depending on the person.  I weigh from 160-175 depending on the scale *^).  My doctor told me that an addicting dose for me would be about 1000mg a day.         Now I’m taking 1500 mg a day of Ginsing, an oriental herb stimulant. I get the same benefit as ritalin, but no side effects!        ,_        /_)              /| /       /   i e t e r    / |/ a g e l       The Platinum Puma

be careful there; ginseng has subtler side-effects on the endocrine system than you’ll notice, day-to-day. the most important one, probably, is that it suppresses the immune system somewhat. chinese herbalists recommend that young people should only take ginseng in the winter. while the seasonal precaution may sound goofy to you, remember that their documented clinical experience with ginseng goes back a couple of thousand years. if you find yourself coming down with a cold, an allergy, a cold sore, or a hangnail, you should stop the ginseng. i’m a fan of ginseng myself, and i’ve used it in around a dozen forms at different times, but i’ve learned that its benefits don’t come free, and that it’s not a toy. btw, despite its stimulating properties, ginseng is classed as a tonic, and not as a stimulant, by herbalists. i believe this means that its effects mostly tend to strengthen, regulate, and moderate the body. oh, yes, one other side-effect, which would be important for some people: some varieties of ginseng, especially siberian ginseng, enhance fertility.                                         -don davis, boston

I heard that some of the ginsenosides in ginseng have been shown to bind to gluccocorticoid receptors in vitro.  Immune suppression makes sense then if ginseng indeed possesses gluccocorticoid action.  i also heard somewhere that it may also possess estrogenic action.  To me it does not sound like something i would want to take in large amounts or for a long period of time. I took Ritalin from age 8 until age 12, and towards the end was taking 80 mg a day.  A new doctor took me off the meds and tried some alternate diets (low-sodium, low-sugar) which, looking back, didn’t do all that much. I am wondering about the current usages of Ritalin for adults. |                                 |  "Somehow or other no assertation  | |                                 |   philosophers to make" — Cicero  | — .
