Sleep paralysis

Question:

Dear Wraithrat: I have spells where I am awake, but cannot move and cannot open my eyes for up to 2 hours.  I tell my eyes to open (silently because I can’t speak), I tell my arms to move, I tell myself to set up, but nothing happens.  I had an EEG and it showed an abnormal brain wave(s).  The neurologist put me on an anti-convulsant (Depakote), and the spells have almost been completely eliminated.  I have a 30minute spell sometimes, but not every day. Hope this helps you. Do you mean your muscles are paralyzed and your eyes are open and you can’t move anything but your eyes and there are people in the room and you can’t move to get away and its really scary? You’re in REM sleep and your eyes are open. — janecek <at> tezcat <dot> com

The first time I woke up paralyzed was pretty much the freakiest experience I’ve ever had.  It scared the HELL out of me!  I told a friend about it and he mentioned there was something called sleep paralysis. I was wondering if anyone out there can relate to this condition or has any info on the subject.  If so, replies would be greatly appreciated. -Adrenaline — Posted via Talkway – http://www.talkway.com Exchange ideas on practically anything ™.

I am by NO means an expert on this, but I know exactly what you are talking about.  I have had this since I was very little.  As a kid I used to think of many horrible things that caused it.  Monsters holding me down and the like. As I got older, I realized it had to be something else. I have learned that your body produces a chemical while you are asleep that stops your muscles from acting out your dreams.  Kind of like a dog who kicks in his sleep!  I humans, some of us do not have this chemical doing what it is suppose to, and that leads to things like sleep walking.  If all is normal, this chemical is turned off long enough before waking up that when you get back to consciousness you just wake up and go.  But in some of us, this chemical gets turned off to late, or we just wake up too soon.  In those instances, you lay there wide awake, but unable to even open your eyes! Fully aware of the world around you, but unable to do or say anything about it. I have woken up, and laid there for what seems like 10 minutes, finally jumping in the bed screaming because I wanted so badly to move or talk.  Most of the time, though, I just enjoy the last few minutes of the dream world, and know I will be able to move soon enough. I could tell you quite a few horror stories about times when there was a nightmare just before, and not being able to tell the difference between reality and dream.  It can be tough. -Jeff ———–== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==———- http://www.dejanews.com/       Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own

Adrenaline, Everyone has sleep paralysis 4 – 6 times every night. It happens each time we cycle into REM sleep so that we wouldn’t act out the dreams that we have then. Ususally we don’t notice these episodes of sleep paralysis. When we do we have Awareness during Sleep Paralysis. It is often extremely frightening, but it doesn’t have to be. Some people hope to induce it because it can be a gateway to Out-of-Body experiences and/or lucid dreams. There is a mailing list you may be interested in: ASP-L – the Awareness during Sleep Paralysis mailing list, a forum for: 1. Anyone know good info on this? Ive been having them for the last 6 years now…  they are getting more intense lately, looked on a site and said its a symptom of narcolepsy.  Its when you cant move when you wake up, and sometimes I can see things and even have something that feels like im getting out of my body(2 times to be exact).  I’m 22 now, started haveing them when I was 16.  Alltogehter I probably had 30 at the most, more than half of them i had in the last 2 years.  Anyone else ?

I had it for awhile and found out it was caused by sleep depravation caused by Apenea. I was not Narcoleptic. I’ve had it since I was approximately 6 and I do not suffer from sleep apnea nor narcolepsy. Blue skies, Carol "Those who don’t, can’t understand.   Those who do, can’t explain."

I think you may be thinking of "Secrets of sleep", The last of three episodes was on tonight (Thurs), 9 pm CH4. – and I missed it :-( (( The series concentrated on the activity of the brain during sleep (no references to apnoea). I saw last week’s episode, it focussed on sleep paralysis and even proposed that alien abduction experiences are a result of sleep paralysis episodes!
