sleep seizures

Question:

I used to have occasional sleep seizures, along with more violent awake seizures. As a consequence, I started taking Epilim, which I think is a fairly new medication(?). This controlled it well, as long as I avoided binging on alcohol.

Response:

I have No information on ’sleep walking’. For my Complex Partial (Temporal Lobe) seizures my Neuro. told me during sleep our ‘guards are down’ so we could be more prone to Nocturnal Seizures. (In other words our ‘Seizure Threshold’ is Lower than while awake.) Since I had already had a number of these as I switched from Dilantin over to Tegretol CR and later added Frisium, my Neuro recommended that I see my Dentist to be ‘fitted’ for an Occlusal Splint– it’s a Wax semi circle which fits snuggly over the Top teeth at Bedtime. IF you had a Nocturnal Seizure, it would protect you from *Tongue or *Tooth Damage during the night.   I am due to be ‘Refitted’ for a New one in LATE June, so I do not have current Canadian Dental Costs. (I will ‘Post’ the actual Cost as a ‘guide’ when I have it available.)   The Initial Impression I had done in 1993 cost ABOUT $3-400. Canadian for the *Imprint and *Lab work. Then each ‘Splint’ cost *about 60 Dollars (I think the First one was included Within the $400. initial cost above)… They EACH last 12-18 months and extras can be made from the Dental Impression taken during the One time Lab Work (above). –>My Original Dental plan paid the costs for this in 1993 (I’ve used about 3 or 4 Total ‘Splints’ over the Last 6 Years). My ‘new’ Dental plan may ‘Not’ pay the costs. I am going to have it done anyway, since I’m SURE the appliance has prevented Tongue or Tooth Damage around 4-6 AM when the Night Meds. are starting to wear off.  IF the ’splint’ would suppress your Late Night Seizures, it might also help suppress the ‘Sleep Walking’ as well, which might be a Follow-on to the Initial Seizure.   (My Dentist said for Children, that parents should go to a Hockey Supply Store and buy the type of Mouthguards they sell for Hockey Players. These fit over Both Top and Bottom teeth. He said to ‘cut it in Half’ since they only need the TOP Half to protect teeth and tongues. Since their Jaws and teeth are still growing, they can be easily replaced as needed, at Less Cost than the Dental Route.. Others ‘here’ could try that for Adult sizes as an Experiment if you wanted.) …G. mitchelle15…@webtv.net wrote:

I am looking for someone that has had or is familiar with my situation. Seven years ago I started having seizures in my ****sleep.  I would have the seizure at about 6:00 in the morning and afterwards I would go outside sleep walking.  At first I (we) did not realize that i was having the small seizures..  We just thought that i was sleep walking.  One day after having a sleep walking episode, we laid across the  bed to wait for the time for me to go to the doctor ’s.  I fell asleep and woke up in hospital where they told me that i had  had a gran mal while I was asleep at home.         My main medication was dilantin, which basically keep me seizure free, but gave me big time problems with constipation. About 31/2 years after this started a eased my self off of the meds and I didn’t have a seizure for three years.  Then this past november I had my first awake seizure.  I now take tegretol and gabapentin. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> So, does anyone know any thing about ***sleep seizures*** and sleep > walking???
