Serious sleeping disorder

Question:

Is there anyone out there that can help point me in the right direction? After years and years of chronic yawning in the 1980’s (50-60 times a day (I weighed 300 lbs.) I SUDDENLY stopped sleeping deeply every night   1987.  For months I though I wasn’t sleeping at all at nights.  I lived (live) on the verge of collapse all of the time.  My neck and shoulders ache horribly all of the time.  I can not hold my head erect on my shoulders for more than a few minutes at a time.  I experience the most horrific, distorted, unrefreshing short "episodes" at night. These episodes are not"sleep" in any sense of the word (extremely frightening vivid nightmares accompany these episodes).  I have had two major sleep studies – here is what they showed.  244 minutes of sleep over an 8 hour period.  26 "awakenings" – 33 leg jerks associated with arousal.  74 minutes of level 1 sleep; 170 minutes of level 2 sleep – 0 MINUTES of level 3 or 4 sleep.  45 minutes of REM sleep.  I feel like a truck hit me every morning and I am so exhausted after one of these nights I am bedridden most of the time.  Medications such as Trazodone have not been effective.  Restoril provides a very small measure of relief – I have been on it for three years.  My body is a constant torture to me not being able to get any "deep sleep",  The Kaiser Dr.’s and neurologists have no answers.  Any input would be very much appreciated – jdob…@mho.net

I have developed a theory of sleep that might contain an explanation of your problem.  (You may read it at http://www.naples.net/~nfn03605 on the net.)  Very briefly:  My work suggests you need the hormones DHEA and melatonin for consciousness and sleep, respectively.  They work together; both decline in aging.  Yours have probably prematurely declined.  DHEA has been found to fight obesity and increase energy.  Melatonin induces sleep.  You simply are showing signs of both being in decline.  I have come up against a lot of cynism and skepticism in my postings.  I do not sell anything.  I am not making money from my postings or website.
