Yes and yes, somewhat. For me, Valarian works better than Melatonin. However, I find 5-HTP works better for me than anything else. Valarian seems to stop working after you’ve taken it for a time. Melatonin just never did much for me. Taking 3 5-HTP will put me completely out. (So, I don’t do that anymore.) I don’t know if 5-HTP has the same dependency issues as Melatonin. I’ll have to find out, since I don’t want to do anything to inhibit my body’s natural seratonin production. Whatever you take, if your sleeping disorder stems from an air blockage (as mine does), you need to be careful that it doesn’t inhibit the body’s ability to wake you up when needed (autonomic nervous system).

Yes, anyone taking valerian for longer than about 7 days will start to develop a tolerance to it. It then seems to stop working. That is why I don’t recommed taking it for longer than 7 days at a time without a break of a few days. You can take it up to 3 times a week though. Loki

I meant, after months; not days. I had taken Valarian root, a few nights a week, for almost a year. It slowly, over that time, stopped working. Even after not taking it for 5-6 months, it still doesn’t work for me. However, it was never a wonder drug. At most, it made me mildly relaxed, which allowed me to force myself to go to sleep more quickly. It definitely did NOT make me sleepy. And I do not sleep for longer periods at a time while taking it. I usually sleep for only 1.5 hours at a time, then wake up for an hour or so. When taking 5-HTP, I sleep for almost 3 hours at a time. About 150mg of 5-HTP actually makes me sleepy. (amazing)

I find that Valerian will help me get back to sleep if I wake up in the middle of the night — but it also tends to give me some really bad nightmares. So I’m not very enthusiastic about it.

Yes I have used this herb for several years. I find that it does not make me wake up drowsie in the morning but I do get a great nights sleep. Valerain smells like dirty socks, so I usually take the capsules and not do a tea. Though I have to tell you, the tea once you get used to it is not bad if you add a little peppermint. Also the other herbs that I have tried for sleep are passion flower, chamomile, kava, lady slipper. Hope this helps out, I have been studying herbs for 10 years, and I know how confusing it can be when you are learning about herbs Sarah ———–== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==———- http://www.dejanews.com/ Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own

I use it all the time. It is very effective, but there are considerations. First, you can’t take it every night. The first week, take it every night. After that, take it no more than 3 nights per week. If you take it every night you will build up a tolerance. I also use a combination of skullcap and passionflower. Those can be taken more frequently and can be combined with the valerian. Someone from work gave me two pills to try. It did nothing for me, or should I say I didn’t get any sleep that night. I was up all night. My body felt relaxed but It’s my mind that never rests. That’s the only time I’ve tried it. Jennifer
