I keep coming up with hypnophobia as the fear of sleep.  One page did show it as the fear of sleep or hypnosis. Bob

Hello all I know this ng is mainly for apnea and diagnosed sleep disorders (and I sympathise with you all, it sounds nasty) but perhaps you can help me out with some information about fear of sleep – not for physical reasons, more emotional and psychological ones… I have had a fear of going to sleep for as long as I can remember, just recently I have decided to try to tackle the problem head on and I’ve looked all over the place and can’t find even one reference…perhaps I am looking in the wrong places…anyone? Thanks.

Leah, What you seem to have is hypnophobia, the fear of sleep.  There is a name for it, and you aren’t alone. Here is an URL where someone else asked the same question you asked.  http://www.sleepnet.com/forum4a/messages/560.html You should probably consult your GP about the problem.  The GP should be able to refer you to a professional who can help. Isn’t that the fear of hypnotists?  I think somniphobia is the correct term, but I can’t find a decent link on either subject. >You should probably consult your GP about the problem.  The GP should be able to refer you to a professional who can help.

Agreed. This is one time that the web isn’t the best place for information. (A post in sci.psychology.psychotherapy.moderated might be worth trying.)
