Are there sleep doctors out there that treat more than apnea?

Question:

If the CNS is messing up, and it’s not organic brain disease, it’s by definition psychiatry. IMHO, that’s getting blurred by things like fMRI and PET that show defnite differences between normies and mental health consumers.

My guess is that this is a device for harvesting email addresses. It is a rather poorly constructed survey that only gives answers by email, requiring you to give your address. Dick Evans

do you not have a temporary email (such as a hotmail or yahoo)?  I can’t live without my temporary accounts.  It’s how I keep my main address free of that spam crap. "Richard Evans" <info…@mindspring.com> wrote in message

Not the point. The survey seems to be nothing more than a means of harvesting addresses. I’m not interested in any conclusions it draws, even having them sent to a bogus address. Dick

And if so, how do you find them? I’ve been struggling with early awakening, stuff like that. The recent thread on Circadian Rhythms got me thinking about this. I think I could benefit from someone helping me in this regard, but I have no idea where to start. Preston

Where you could start is https://www.apollohealth.com/apps/circ_assess_survey.html . You may find that you have advanced sleep phase syndrome or you might not. In any case, if you do, it will have a plan on how to correct it. I’m trying to find out, myself, why doctors don’t readily have this information available for us, considering how well it worked for me. I’ve got an email out to a cousin who is a psychologist and I’m going to see what she knows about it.  Maybe it’s not considered mainstream yet and all the evidince so far is anecdotal.  I will let the group know what I find (if I find anything). Stress, Early Awakening

Question:

I appear to suffer from Early Awakening Insomnia (also called Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome.)      Work stress also seems to be a factor – my Doc tells me I need a wind-down period before bed where I do a "manual hobby" (puzzles, build kits, etc.) I can’t read or watch TV – they are too stimulating.      Anyone have a similar condition? Any suggestions?

Hi Tom, I’m afraid I don’t have any good suggestions for you, but I just thought I’d reply to let you know that you’re not alone.  I usually fall asleep easily at night and then have problems sleeping after about 4 hours even though I need about twice that amount of sleep.  I am currently trying to deal with this through medication (Trazodone) with only limited success.  If you find anything that works, please post about it and I’ll do the same. Regards, Tim Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

i have had this for a few years and have done the following with reasonable success: – half a benadryl tablet at night keeps me drowsy even if I wake up and go to bathroom during the  night  - I can still fall asleep again.  it keeps me sleeping 7 hours or so without waking up. – occasionally use 1/3 of unisom  tablet – I find even half is very potent for me – read book "desperately seeking snoozin " and found that staying up later by 30 minutes or more breaks the cycle and keeps me sleeping longer.  I am following this approach instead of benadryl most of the time.     The full approach is detailed in the book and you can buy online. I think work stress relates to this but once you have stress for period of time I think you get into bad sleep habits even if you stop having stress alan Tom Ingram <tomin…@gte.net> wrote in message

Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome Treatment

Question:

What are the usual treatments for "Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome?" This is a condition whereby one falls asleep in the early evening regardless of the time he went to sleep. Part of the problem is excessive sleepiness during the day. I see this condition written up alot but no treatment suggestions. ——————-==== Posted via Deja News ====———————–       http://www.dejanews.com/     Search, Read, Post to Usenet

Response:

Hi, Melinda, Light therapy is used for Advanced Sleep  Phase Syndrome. However, you also mention excessive sleepiness during the day.  This can be the sign of other sleep disorders, so if you haven’t talked with a board certified sleep specialist, I would suggest you do so. I must have gotten extremely lucky then…I posted here about having to stay up later and later, no matter how tired I was, and someone suggested I try exercising outdoors in the mornings. It literally fixed the problem overnight (though it’s more difficult to cope with now that winter is upon us.) Hi, Melinda, In my vast researches, only light therapy seems to hold any promise (that, and RELIGIOUSLY-strict sleep hygiene, of course!) The pivotal paper on this topic seems to be this one: http://www.apollolight.com/article.html (This article is on a website by a company who manufactures light boxes, but the text is unaltered from the original article in a respected journal). Read this over, and see if you can get the sense of it. It would be best if you could work with a physician who is capable of understanding the content, so you might want to try to find someone familiar with the topic. It may take some time for the light therapy and strict schedule to help you; but the results are quite hopeful. If it’s any consolation, it’s much easier to move the body’s clock FORWARD (staying up later at night) than BACKWARD (getting up earlier in the morning). It takes four MONTHS to fix the latter! I don’t know how long it will take to fix your problem. You can e-mail me if you have further questions.
